This mid-priced, 18-floor high-rise sits on a pristine beach with two gorgeous pools. The Alexander All-Suite Oceanfront Resort is great for families on a budget who benefit from the easy beach access and fully equipped kitchens. Rooms can be hit or miss; each of the 125 suites are individually decorated, some have sleek, modern kitchens and bathrooms with granite counters, others have outdated decor, and some are in desperate need of renovation with moldy ceilings and grout. Some booking sites include breakfast with the price of a room. Shula's Steakhouse is popular with locals and guests while Top of the Falls does cocktails and happy hours. Overall, this is a good choice for a taste of peaceful luxury while staying within budget on the quieter end of Miami Beach.
Scene
Pink family-friendly condos on the beach
The Alexander All-Suite Oceanfront Resort's multi-story pink tower edged in coral is easy to spot amongst the neighboring high-rise hotels along trendy Collins Avenue. The traditional lobby feels very grand, with a sweeping staircase, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and wood paneling. The space is sparsely furnished, with just a small alcove housing a cluster of red armchairs, so that the lobby looks and feels more like an old-time ballroom than a reception area. Families and couples visiting Miami to enjoy quiet on the beach would be happiest here. Nightlife seekers should stick closer to the party scene on South Beach.
Location
On North Beach and across the street from Indian Creek
In a quieter area of Miami, set right on the beach alongside many other mid-priced hotels. A nice promenade along Indian Creek is directly across the street -- great for a stroll, jogging, or watching boats. A five-minute walk will lead to everything from kosher Chinese to oceanfront Cuban food. The bars and clubs of South Beach are about 15-minutes away by cab. Expect a 25-minute drive to Miami International Airport. Like most hotels in Miami, this one charges daily for parking.
Rooms
Condo-style with plenty of space and gorgeous views (some need an update)
One-and-two-bedroom condo-style suites are ideal for families and groups who want space and a full kitchen, but as these condos are privately owned, decor and maintenance is a bit of a gamble. One suite may have a modern sectional sofa, stainless steel kitchen appliances, and a sparkling bathroom while the suite next door may have worn out 80s-era furniture and a mold problem. Suites range from 920 to 1250 square feet. There are separate living rooms, dining areas, and full kitchens with cutlery and cooking equipment. Balconies have views of the ocean or the Intercoastal Waterway (the best views have both from the highest floors). Flat-screen TVs, espresso machines, and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries are luxe touches. The Signature Suite has a glass encased shower and separate whirlpool tub, plus marble details.
Features
Easy beach access, two freeform pools, and many dining options
After playing in the easily accessible sand and surf, there are many recreational activities on the beach for a fee -- everything from banana-boat rides to parasailing. The hotel has two freeform pools with lounge chairs and poolside food and drinks service. A waterfall adds tropical ambiance to the second pool. The fitness room is a little shabby, but equipped with two treadmills, two stair machines, two stationary bikes, and 10 circuit machines. An outpost of the well-respected Shula's Steak House chain is on the premises and opens for Happy Hour and dinner. If that's too fancy, the Garden Terrace serves casual breakfast and lunch while appetizers are available at the Miami Dolphins themed No Name Lounge. Top of the Falls does smoothies, small plates, and happy hour. Room services serves late, but not all night. Concierge services are available and the front-desk is staffed 24/7. Toiletries, beach reads, and snacks can be picked-up at the Alexander sundry shop. There's expansive indoor and outdoor function space, as well as 10 meeting rooms. Audiovisual equipment is available to rent.
