Bottom Line

The family-run Ocean Five Hotel is an upper-mid-range boutique with affordable prices and an Art Deco aesthetic, located within walking distance of the beach and shopping. There are 81 rooms spread over three floors of three historic buildings, all outfitted with simple decor in warm colors, modern amenities, and either hardwood or Italian marble floors. Studio rooms are located in an annex building. There's an affiliated Italian cafe, where breakfast is served each morning, but there are few other facilities at this hotel, best known for its affordable rates and convenient location. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are free. Circa Hotel, a 10-minute drive down the beach, has slightly higher rates -- but has the extra perks of a swimming pool, fitness center, and two meeting rooms.

Scene

A simple Art Deco boutique

Despite the candy-colored Art Deco architecture on the outside, the Ocean Five Hotel has a cozy, simpler theme inside. The lobby has retro look and, in true
Miami style, there’s a cabinet near the entrance that sells cigars, and coffee is also for sale. A combination of two different Art Deco hotels that date back to the 1930s, this family-run hotel is popular with couples looking for a stylish and affordable stay near South Beach, but not in the direct center. The affiliated Italian cafe is popular and lively, and has an outdoor terrace. The hotel is less likely to appeal to business travelers because of its lack of
meeting rooms and facilities, although the Miami Convention Center is only a 10-minute drive
away.

Location

In Miami’s historic Art Deco District, away from the hustle and bustle of central Ocean Drive

The Ocean Five Hotel is located on the quiet side
of Ocean Drive, across the street from miles of white sandy beaches and within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. Guests can rent bicycles on Ocean Drive or
use public transportation to get anywhere around town. Lummus Park is one block from the hotel. Lincoln Road, with its unique shops and sidewalk
cafes, is a leisurely 30-minute stroll, or a quick cab ride or drive. Miami International Airport is 20-minute
drive away. The hotel offers parking for a fee.

Rooms

Modern decor -- although some bathrooms are small

Rooms at the Ocean Five Hotel are divided between three buildings and all have the same minimalist, retro-inspired style. Rooms are divided into Studio and Standard options, the former of which are larger and have fully stocked kitchenettes. Both room categories are decorated similarly, with either hardwood or marble floors and a beige-and-yellow color scheme. Beds have white headboards and numerous pillows. Studio kitchens each have an electric oven and large fridge/freezer. All rooms have modern amenities like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, ironing boards and irons, iPod docks, coffeemakers (although you have to provide your own coffee), and laptop-sized safes. Bathrooms are modern -- and large, if you snag a studio room -- with glass-fronted showers and fluffy towels. The bathroom tiles could do with re-grouting. No rooms have ocean views.

Features

A funky pizza restaurant and al fresco terrace

The hotel's Pappa & Ciccia Italian Restaurant is a chic and affordable on-site eatery, with a brick pizza oven. Fresh on Fifth Deli serves salads, sandwiches, and smoothies at the hotel's sister property Ocean Five Condo on Fifth and Ocean Drive. Freebies include Wi-Fi and a daily continental breakfast in the restaurant, although the food offerings are unimpressive. There's a computer in the lobby with internet for guests' use. Snacks and coffee are available to purchase in the lobby.
