Bottom Line

The 263-room Holiday Inn Miami West - Hialeah Gardens is a comfortable three-pearl option conveniently located a 20-minute drive from Miami International Airport. Rooms were renovated in 2016 and are appealing, with cozy beds and pillow menus to ensure a good sleep, plus mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and large flat-screen TVs. There’s an on-site restaurant and bar with good meals for breakfast and dinner -- though neither is included in the rate. Those looking for a bit more style might prefer the Pullman Miami Airport Hotel, but the price reflects the upgrade.

Scene

Comfortable hotel with an appealing, fresh design and decent features

Formerly a Howard Johnson, The Holiday Inn Miami West underwent a renovation in 2016, resulting in fresh rooms and some updated features. The lobby is a nice spot with a modern look, but little to give it extra pizzazz. Carpets are colorful and there are a few bright accents, but otherwise the palette is neutral with ivory and gray tones and wood furniture. Tall windows let in lots of natural light and there are ample comfortable seating areas, some with a TV. A bistro with citrus colors provides additional seating and a spot to lounge, as does an outdoor pool. Overall, it has a bright feel and a welcoming, casual atmosphere. Business travelers and some families come for the proximity to the airport and chain features like kids staying for free.

Location

Convenient spot close to the airport and entertainment, but in a nondescript area

This hotel is in Hialeah Gardens, a small city in the busy Miami area that's close to the airport. Miami International Airport is a 20-minute drive away, or the hotel offers a free shuttle from morning until late (between 6 a.m. and midnight during our stay). It is just off the Palmetto Expressway in a congested spot full of businesses and lots of traffic. Westland Mall is an eight-minute walk from the hotel and has many fast-food and retail chains. It is a three-minute walk to the nearest public bus stop. Amelia Earhart Park, an 11-minute drive away, has 515 acres of space with lakes for fishing, a petting zoo, and pony rides. Hialeah Park’s racetrack and casino is a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Downtown Miami is a 20- to 30-minute drive away, depending on traffic. The gorgeous -- and extremely popular -- Miami Beach is a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious, comfortable rooms with a fresh look, though the design is generic

Thanks to their 2016 renovation, spacious rooms are contemporary and attractive, though certainly generic. Beige and ivory tones dominate the walls, carpet, and furnishings, plus there’s a splash of color in a painting or two, and sometimes a bright chair matching the artwork. The two queen beds or single king-size are comfortable, and a pillow menu is available for a cozy sleep. All rooms have a 48-inch flat-screen TV, a coffeemaker with free coffee and tea, mini-fridge, an iron, and free safe. Most rooms do not have a balcony, but there are a few on the top floor. Bathrooms are nice with modern fixtures and a shower/tub combo with a curtain. A hairdryer and free toiletries are provided.

Features

A pool, whirlpool, on-site restaurant, fitness room, and business cente

The typical range of services for a Holiday Inn is available here. There’s a pleasant outdoor pool with an adjacent whirlpool and loungers, surrounded by a screen of trees instead of a parking lot view. Meals are not included, but the on-site restaurant offers a choice of a buffet or a la carte breakfast, plus a dinner menu and a bar. The food is reportedly good. As is typical at Holiday Inn, kids under 18 stay free, and kids under 11 eat free at the restaurant.A small fitness room has a few machines consisting of cardio and weight-training equipment. There are meeting rooms, and the business center is open 24/7. A few other free extras add to the appeal, like airport shuttle service, daily newspaper, and on-site parking. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
