Bottom Line

The three-pearl Habitat Residence in Miami's financial district attracts both long-term and short-stay guests with its clean and spacious apartments. Each unit, ranging from one to three bedrooms, has a full kitchen, living/dining area, and a balcony, and is furnished in a crisp and contemporary, if plain, style. The hotel also offers an outdoor pool with loungers, a fitness center, and a conference room. There's a supermarket within walking distance, and public transportation is an eight-minute walk away. As of late fall 2015, construction of a high-rise building next door made this otherwise quiet neighborhood noisy, and guests should also note that the valet parking -- the only option on-site -- is pricey. For something with more features, travelers might want to check out the nearby Aloft Miami Brickell.

Scene

Mid-range property attracts tourist families, business travelers, and students

The Habitat Residence is housed in two all-white towers with terraces, offering spacious apartments with kitchens that attract families and long-term guests. The lobby is a sleek, contemporary space cloaked in neutral white and gray colors. White sofas provide seating, and guests can stay entertained with a flat-screen TV and a wall of shelves with coffee table books. Hallways throughout are enlivened by bright and colorful abstract art pieces lining the walls, while the outdoor pool area offers a pleasant sundeck to relax and enjoy the sun on. Note that some previous guests consider the check-in process onerous; the rules of the Habitat Residence are numerous and detailed, and include such directives as "no spitting off the balconies," lending a college dormitory vibe.

Location

In the Brickell area, Miami's financial district

The Habitat Residence is on the edge of Miami's financial district in the Brickell area. The Shops at Mary Brickell Village are a 13-minute walk from the hotel, and there's a Publix Supermarket just five minutes away on foot. Public transportation options are good here too; there is the Financial District Metromover Station just 10 minutes away on foot, and a rail station is an eight-minute walk away. Simpson Park, a good place for visitors to go for a run, is a five-minute walk away. The American Airlines Arena is about a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute train ride. Sun Life Stadium, where the Miami Dolphins play, is about a 25-minute drive. South Beach is 20 minutes away by car or about an hour by train. The University of Miami in Coral Gables is a 20-minute drive or a 30-minute train ride. Miami International Airport can be reached in about 15 to 20 minutes by car or around 30 minutes via train.

Rooms

Spacious, practical apartments with plain decor

The Habitat Residence offers spacious, simply decorated, one- to three-bedroom apartments with full kitchens, living/dining areas, and furnished balconies. A neutral gray, beige, and white color scheme and minimalist decor make the spaces feel a bit plain and bland, but they're clean and pleasant, with contemporary furnishings and large windows. The kitchens feature bleached wood with stainless appliances including stoves, full-size refrigerators, microwaves, coffeemakers, blenders, and dishwashers, as well as dishware, cookware, utensils, and flatware. Counter space is limited in the smaller units. The living areas feature sleek bookshelves and furnishings in neutral-hued leather, suede, and fabric, as well as wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. Bedrooms are large, with oversized wooden headboards with reading lamps and beds topped with white linens and neutral throws. Some bedrooms also have flat-screen TVs. White or cream-colored bathrooms are plain and simple, with either walk-in showers (some with rainfall showerheads) or tub/shower combinations, plus toiletries are provided. All units also have washers and dryers.

Features

Outdoor pool, fitness center, conference room, business center, and free Wi-Fi

Unlike many apartment-unit properties, the Habitat Residence offers a fair amount of on-site features. The hotel has a chic outdoor pool surrounded by a sundeck lined with loungers, plus there are tables and chairs scattered throughout the outdoor space. There's a small fitness center equipped with various machines and free weights. Business travelers are catered to with a 450-square-foot conference room as well as a business center with computers, printers, and a fax, plus Wi-Fi is free throughout. Valet parking is the only on-site parking option, and some complain that it's pricey. Potential guests should be aware of the extensive list of rules that accompany check-in at this property, as well as possible noise issues from ongoing construction nearby (as of 2015).
