A 147-room mid-level hotel, the Doubletree Ocean Point Resort & Spa is an attractive pick for families located way north of South Beach in suburban Sunny Isles. Hotel highlights include a lovely beach, lots of sunlight, and glimpses of the ocean from nearly every balcony. Large rooms -- many of them suites with full kitchens -- and an attractive (though small) pool with a children's splash area are enticements for families. However, this is not the right destination for nightlife seekers and guests report some construction noise.
Scene
Lots of light, but dated and generic
The Doubletree's public spaces are flooded with sunlight through floor-to-ceiling windows but are unexceptional and a bit frayed around the edges. A breakfast buffet set up along one wall of the lobby leads to an outdoor dining terrace with beautiful ocean views. A spacious, sunny gym overlooking the pool is a pleasant place to workout.
Location
Quiet and residential
The Doubletree is located in an affluent North Miami suburb called Sunny Isles filled with high-rise condos and hotels, with more under construction. Area restaurant options are primarily fast-food franchises, although a strip mall across Collins Avenue offers some additional possibilities. There's upscale shopping five minutes away at the Aventura Mall. If you want to sample the South Beach scene, the 12-mile cab ride will set you back about $30. The Miami International Airport is 45 minutes away by taxi and the Fort Lauderdale International Airport is 30 minutes away by taxi.
Rooms
Not chic, but spacious and full of amenities
Rooms are large, clean, and quiet though the dark, oversized headboards and stodgy furniture could use an update. Many one and two-bedroom suites are configured like apartments with full size kitchens, separate dining areas, washer/dryers, and balconies with water views. A pullout sofa in the living room makes a comfortable stay for a family of four. Bathrooms are equally spacious and well-equipped, with a large double-sink vanity, separate walk-in shower, oversized jetted tub, and a bidet.
Features
A low stress option for a family vacation
A wide, soft beach combined with apartment-sized rooms provides a good mix of comfort and convenience for families. The hotel has a lobby restaurant, a coffee shop/convenience store near the beach, and a poolside bar. The fresh and feminine spa adjacent to the fitness center offers hair and beauty treatments by appointment. A daily resort charge covers Wi-Fi access, beach chairs, and a limited food and beverage credit at the hotel restaurant. The pool is a bit small, but does have a splash area for kids. There is no self-parking and valet parking is pricey.
