Bottom Line

The budget-friendly Casablanca on the Ocean Hotel offers slightly out of date yet large guest rooms with completely stocked kitchens including refrigerators and stoves. Views from private balconies overlook the white sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean or another guest's room. The North Beach location is quieter and more family-friendly than bustling South Beach. An on-site gift shop and Bogart's restaurant serve meals throughout the day. The property shows signs of wear throughout and many areas look dated (despite renovations completed in 2014), but people stay here for the low rates and the beachfront location.

Scene

A quiet budget resort on the Atlantic Ocean

The Casablanca first opened its doors in the 1950s, and the lobby still has vestiges of its grander days, including big square pillars and marble tile floors. The leather seating, bamboo displays, and candle chandeliers are attractive, but the effect is slightly marred by the dated ceiling panels found in much of the lobby, which look like they could belong in a '90s office building. Hard-to-miss pillars shaped like shirtless men wearing white turbans hold up the porte cochere at the entrance.

Location

In residential North Beach, about a 10-minute drive from the South Beach action

Casablanca on the Ocean is on a quieter strip of Collins Avenue. It's about a 10-minute drive to the action in South Beach, and the posh Bal Harbour shops are a 20-minute drive away. The white sandy beach and Atlantic Ocean are directly behind the hotel and there is easy access from the main building. Nearby restaurants cater to Argentinian and Uruguayan cuisines. This quiet, somewhat residential neighborhood is a bit more family-friendly than South Beach.

Rooms

Clean and functional, with fully equipped kitchens and (in some) balconies

Rooms at Casablanca on the Ocean resemble bland studio or one-bedroom apartments. All have fully equipped but dated kitchens, and the refrigerator is right next to the bed in some cases. The white bedding and blue bed skirts looks fresh and beachy, but there are still some signs of wear evident (such as carpet stains) despite 2014 renovations. Rooms with tile floors are preferable to those with carpets. Some rooms have small balconies, which face either the ocean or another guest's room. In the bathtub, dispensers of shampoo and conditioner are mounted to the wall.

Features

Restaurant, swimming pool, and a quiet beach

The Casablanca on the Ocean hotel has a small fitness center without windows. A gift shop stocks a wide variety of snacks and beach equipment. Bogart's restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails near the large outdoor swimming pool. There is a gate and a sandy path from the pool area offering direct access to a beautiful stretch of North Beach, which is quieter and more serene than South Beach.
