Bottom Line

Opening its doors in 1928, the 50-room Casa Claridge is a Spanish Colonial property across from the beach, removed from South Beach’s party scene, with charming interiors, arched architectural designs, and modern artwork in the atrium and library. Cocktail parties can be held on the rooftop terrace with partial ocean views and Cafe Claridge’s -- with American and Argentinian fare -- can also be reserved for private events. Mid-century modern rooms have balconies; suites offer living rooms and studios have rooftop terraces. Before booking, travelers may want to consider the centrally located Fritz Hotel, which has a pool.

Scene

Colonial Spanish hotel dripping in 1930s charm with modern artwork

Inside and out, the Casa Claridge oozes Spanish Colonial charm. Red trim adorns this four-floor hotel which features lovely archways, red umbrellas on a wrap-around patio, and an awning over the double glass door entrance. However, street noise can be disturbing for guests seeking relaxation on the patio. Two dark wooden desks provide an intimate check-in process in the lobby, where modern artwork -- part of the hotel’s “Elevate” rotating gallery -- add charm to the atmosphere. Designed by architect Martin L. Hampton, this hotel opened in 1928. Arched designs on the third and second floors  -- with lovely wooden carved railings -- can be seen from the stunning atrium which features built-in arched shelves stocked with art books and comfy sofas. Open hallways are lined in terracotta tiles that create a Mediterranean vibe. Even the elevator has been carefully designed with clusters of magnet letters and numbers inside. This hotel provides a unique and competitively priced stay away from the hubbub in South Beach. It largely appeals to couples, but kids also dig the fun designs.

Location

Miami Beach location, across from the beach with lounge chairs

This hotel isn’t in the heart of the South Beach scene, but that’s a plus for most guests who prefer a quiet retreat -- although occasional street noise can be annoying. This hotel is between Mid Beach and South Beach, with limited restaurants and bars in the area. The real attraction is the beach across the street that’s manned by the hotel staff who provides towels, lounge chairs, and umbrellas at no additional charge. Valet parking is available or guests can park across the street. It’s a 20-minute walk to the Bass Museum of Art. Shopping on the Lincoln Road Mall is 10 minutes away by car, and near the Miami Beach Convention Center, but most guests aren’t in town on business. Within five to 10 minutes by car are the hot spots LIV, Mokai, and the Mansion Nightclub. The drive to the Miami International Airport takes 20 minutes.

Rooms

Simple, elegant rooms come with unique Mediterranean style, flat-screen TVs, and minibars; many have balconies.

There’s a simple and elegant vibe in rooms that feature Mediterranean designs, mid-century modern furniture, and unique furnishings -- picture carved bed frames, terracotta floor tiles, and antique rugs. Instead of the traditional “Do Not Disturb” signs, rooms have red tassels that signal a desire for privacy. Balconies are in some rooms that face the ocean, but many views are blocked by buildings. Rooms fit two people and the Queen Suite holds up to four guests. With terracotta floors and blue tiles, bathrooms have shower/tub combos and some have soaking bathtubs. The hotel offers Casa Rooms with queen, king, or two double beds. Oceanfront California King rooms have California King beds, living rooms, and terraces. Queen Suites are the largest option, and include separate comfy living rooms. King Studios offer direct access to the rooftop terrace. Every room has plush bathrobes, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, docking stations, safes, and minibars. Some bathrooms need refurbishing and calcium buildup is noticeable on showerheads.

Features

Beach access, a rooftop terrace, meeting space, a cafe and bar, pet-friendly rooms, and free Wi-Fi

This hotel is across the street from the beach and partial sea views -- although mostly blocked by trees -- can be seen from the rooftop terrace that’s decorated with potted plants and offers seating for cocktail parties of up to 100 people. Also available to rent are the atrium, which fits up to 100 people, and the library, with space for 10-person dinners. Cafe Claridge’s offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner and a nice wine list in a dining room that features dramatic golden curtains, blue decorative wallpaper, and black-and-white rattan furniture. Dining tables and comfy sofas are also outside on the wrap-around patio. On Friday nights the hotel offers tertulia chamber music. Pet owners can bring their furry friends in rooms for a fee. And Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel.
