Bottom Line

The 50-room budget Hotel Del Principado is in the Zona Rosa neighborhood, within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars, and businesses. The staff is bilingual, and there's a restaurant on-site that serves all meals, including a breakfast buffet. Rooms are no-frills and not air-conditioned, and bathrooms are small with some maintenance problems, such as rust stains, dirty grout, and peeling paint. It's main selling point is its central location and low rates. Another budget option travelers could consider is Hotel Fontan Reforma.

Scene

Basic 50-room hotel, bilingual staff

Hotel Principado is a basic, four-story budget hotel that opened in 1975. Five country flags above the Hotel Principado sign mark the covered entrance off the street, and stairs with plants on each side lead to the lobby. The small lobby has a tile floor and a sofa but has no real decor aside from a single plant atop a glass table. The check-in desk is at the back and is manned by a bilingual staff. The traditional-style restaurant, with a beautiful tile floor and black-and-white photographs of movie stars on the walls, is off to the side.

Location

In the heart of the Zona Rosa neighborhood, close to shops, restaurants, bars, and businesses

Hotel Del Principado is located in the heart of the Zona Rosa neighborhood within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars, and businesses. It's also within a 15-minute walking radius of two large shopping malls, the Telmex Cultural Center, Paseo de la Reforma, and the Mexico Arena. A metro station, a 10-minute walk away, can get to places farther afield. Mexico City International Airport is a 35- to 40-minute drive away.

Rooms

Basic Singles, Doubles, Triples, and Quadruples with small bathrooms

The hotel's 50 basic rooms, which include Singles, Doubles, Triples, and Quadruples, have wood floors, cedar furnishings, loudly colored bedspreads, flat-screen TVs, open closet space (some with wire hangers), free bottled water, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are small with showers, and some show maintenance problems such as peeling paint, dirty grout, and rust stains. There is no air conditioning, but portable fans are in the rooms.

Features

On-site restaurant serving all meals

Principado Restaurant serves Mexican, Spanish, and international fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there's a bar on-site as well. Black-and-white photos of celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin, cover the walls. There's a computer in the lobby for guests to use. Smoking is allowed on the fourth floor. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
