Bottom Line
Hotel Casa Gonzalez is a charming and historic property that functions more like a cozy guest house than a traditional hotel. Four historic "homes" built in the 1930s and '40s are scattered through a lush courtyard. The 33 rooms are renovated to include flat-screen TVs and private bathrooms, most have an outdoor area as well. Meals are served in a charming dining room on communal tables; breakfast isn't included but the prices are low. The American and British embassies are in the neighborhood, and guests often book long-term stays at this casual and welcoming family-run budget property while they deal with immigration issues.

Historic homes converted into guest houses
Casa Gonzalez consists of four older homes built in the traditional Mexican quinta-style, surrounded by courtyards and gardens. The two original homes were built by the current owners' grandfather in the mid 1920s. One of the houses belonged to a famous Mexican movie star, Lupe Velez. The latest addition was built in the early 1940s by architect Roberto Buenrostro, as his private residence. The guest house started operating in the early '30s by the grandmother and great grandmother of the current owners. Today, it's a favorite among students, tourists, couples, and families who want a casual and homey ambience. The lobby has white walls and laminate wood floors. It's decorated with Dia de los Muertos statues and antique orange sofas. Spanish-tile and reproduction paintings add a bit of color to the space. Most guests spend their time outdoors on patio furniture, where they can admire the flowers and listen to birds chirp.
Location
Directly in front of the British Embassy
Hotel Casa Gonzalez is located on the busy street of Rio Sena 69, directly across the street from the British Embassy. The American Embassy is just down the street as well, and the neighborhood is safe and walkable. There are ample shops, banks, restaurants, and bars nearby. It's less than a two block walk to the iconic Paseo de la Reforma, which has more upscale shops and boutiques. Zona Rosa, a hip neighborhood with an art and gay scene, is about a five-minute walk. Mexico City International Airport is about a 30-minute drive from the hotel. Parking is free and available at Hotel Casa Gonzalez, which is a rarity for Mexico City.
Rooms
Individually decorated and comfortable
Each of the 30 rooms at the hotel is individually decorated, comfortable, and renovated. Double Room A is cozy and includes laminate hardwood floors, white walls, and orange curtains. A patchwork quilt covers the double bed and there's a large wooden wardrobe that functions as a closet. Gold-framed oil paintings and portraits line the walls. This room has a small furnished balcony decorated with green plants and overlooks the street. The bathroom is snug and includes a shower and tiny single sink. The Accessible Room looks the most modern and is carpeted. White bedding and a larger bathroom look fresh. All rooms come standard with a small flat-screen TV, telephone, free Wi-Fi, and a built-in safe. Rooms that face the street pick up a bit of noise, which is common in Mexico City.
Features
Full restaurant, free Wi-Fi, and helpful front desk
Features at Hotel Casa Gonzalez are incredibly limited, as it operates more as a guest house than a traditional hotel. There's a family run Mexican restaurant on-site that serves a substantial breakfast for a small fee. Two communal tables provide seating indoors, or there are small white patio tables on the terrace. Guests are welcome to bring their meals to their rooms if they prefer. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Staff can assist with booking excursions, directions, and restaurant recommendations.
