Bottom Line

The Modigliani Art & Design Suites Mendoza is a two-and-a-half-pearl option offering eight studios and apartments in the center of Mendoza. Guests can walk to shopping and dining, as well as Plaza Independencia. Designed for self-sufficient travelers, the bright studios and apartments offer kitchens, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but can be noisy. All have dining space, and larger suites feature living areas. Some of the kitchens are a bit cramped, but they offer most everything needed for self-catering. Some of the suites have balconies or terraces furnished with a table and chairs. The only public space here is on the rooftop, where wine tastings and live music are offered. Travelers who would prefer a hotel with amenities could check out the Hotel Aconcagua, which has a pool.

Scene

Apartment-style property designed for unfussy independent travelers

The Modigliani is trying to be a sharp little boutique hotel, but in what's on offer here is simple. It's designed for self-sufficient travelers who are seeking an alternative to traditional hotels or typical furnished apartments. There's a focus on architecture, design, and art, and the hotel showcases a variety of artwork created by local and international artists, giving its spaces a unique flavor. The only public area here is in the little art gallery next to reception and out on the rooftop terraces, which provide views of the city (not all of them pleasing). In the end the hotel is best used as a place to recharge at night, and mostly draws couples who don't mind the missing frills.

Location

Amid restaurants, shops, bars, and attractions, a seven-minute walk to Plaza Independencia

This hotel is centrally located just off Avenida San Martin, the main street in Mendoza. That puts the property close to shops, restaurants, bars, and attractions, though it also means that the area is busy day and night (and thus, many rooms can be noisy). Guests can walk to Plaza Independencia, where they will find the Museo Municipal Arte Moderno and the Teatro Independencia, in less than 10 minutes. Parque General San Martin can be reached in 15 minutes by car. Plan on about 20 minutes to reach Governor Francisco Gabrielli International Airport by car, or about an hour by public transportation. Most of the area's most famous vineyards will require a car or taxi to reach, and are found within a 20- to 30-minute drive of downtown Mendoza.

Rooms

Bright studios and apartments with kitchens, though things are looking tired in spots

Studios and apartments here are bright, with mostly modern furniture, rugs atop tiled floors, white walls, and original art by local artists. Units are fully equipped for short and mid-term rentals, with kitchens and dining space. Other standard amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, daily housekeeping, and free Wi-Fi. Suites add DVD players and living areas. Some bathrooms are a bit cramped, but they come with showers and hairdryers. A few that we visited showed rust and mildew stains, as well as chipped tiling. Units with balconies or terraces are available, though keep in mind that apartments facing the street may be noisy at times.

Features

Features are lacking except free Wi-Fi and a rooftop terrace for wine tastings and live music

This place is designed for self-sufficient travelers, and there are few features of note. The popular rooftop terrace is where wine tastings are offered on Sunday nights, and sometimes live music performances. A mini art gallery there showcases local artists as well. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. The staff is particularly helpful arranging wine tours of the Mendoza region, so be sure to inquire with them upon booking.
