Bottom Line

Huentala Hotel is a three-and-a-half-pearl property in central Mendoza, located a 10-minute walk from the city’s main square, Plaza Independencia. Decor is pleasant, and there are quirky antique details plus a pool (which isn't all too common in central Mendoza). Features include a bistro-style restaurant, lobby bar, small gym, and spa. Buffet breakfasts are included in rates. The 81 rooms are classically styled, and include amenities like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Downsides? Things are starting to look run down. The hotel is aimed at tourist couples and groups looking to be near the city's sights, alongside some perks found at higher-category properties. It’s worth comparing rates at the Diplomatic Hotel, where rooms are more modern and some have Andes views. However, breakfast there isn’t always included.

Scene

Classic hotel with a few upmarket perks that's a central home base for unfussy tourists

The Huentala Hotel was built in 1976 ahead of Argentina hosting the World Cup two years later. While the rooms here are soft and neutral, public areas have a lot more going on. The lobby is a curiosity-shop-style treasure trove of antique chairs, ornate chandeliers, and period paintings, though some travelers may find it dark rather than atmospheric. In fact, while the hotel isn't entirely dated, it is starting to look a bit tired. Even so, most previous guests give it positive marks, particularly for its location. Huentala is geared toward tourist couples and tour groups looking for a hotel with reasonable-enough rates for a few higher-end perks like a pool and spa.

Location

Near plenty of restaurants and shops, a 10-minute walk from Plaza Independencia

The hotel fronts a cobblestone street in the heart of Mendoza's financial and commercial center, just off the main street. It sits next door to the Sheraton in an ideal spot for business travelers, families, and travelers looking for a property that’s close to restaurants, shops, banks, offices, and travel agencies. Guests can walk to the city’s main square, Plaza Independencia, in about 10 minutes. Sights there include the Museo Municipal Arte Moderno and the Teatro Independencia. A bus stop can be reached in two minutes on foot from the hotel. Parque General San Martin is a 15-minute drive away. The closest wineries are about 30 minutes south of the city by car, in Lujan de Cuyo. Plan on 20 minutes to reach Governor Francisco Gabrielli International Airport by car, or about an hour by public transportation.

Rooms

Rooms have a neutral palette and classic vibe, with options for singles, couples, and families

Rooms have a soft color scheme of cream and beige, plus wooden floors and classic decor like thick curtains and period paintings. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Coffee- and tea-making facilities are provided. Marble bathrooms feature shower/tub combos and toiletries are provided. Classic Rooms range from 215 to 270 square feet (20 to 25 square meters) and come in single, double, and triple options. Suites vary in their layout and features, and start at 375 square feet (35 square meters). Some have whirlpool tubs, while others include separate living rooms. Interconnecting rooms are available for families. We couldn’t hear any street noise from the rooms during our visit, making this a solid bet for light sleepers.

Features

Comprehensive amenities include bistro, pool, spa, and gym, though some extras are underwhelming

Despite its relatively low rates, this hotel manages to pack in a number of extras. For drinks and dining, Chimpay Bistro serves lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner with a focus on authentic Argentinian dishes. Kunuk Bar offers a tapas menu and daily happy hour. An American-style buffet breakfast is included in the rates. The hotel has a small pool outdoors, and there’s a tiny fitness room with cardio equipment. The spa features a wet sauna, dry sauna, and massages -- though the treatment rooms are basic. Other features include a wine shop and art gallery. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. For self-driving guests, parking is available for a fee.
