Bottom Line

The three-pearl Melbourne Short Stay Apartments at Melbourne CBD offers 20 well-equipped units in an excellent downtown location. Central positioning by major transport hubs draws leisure and business travelers alike, but a lack of common areas, dining spaces, and around-the-clock staff are drawbacks. Self-contained apartments are comfortable and contemporary, equipped with spacious living and dining areas, kitchens, and washer/dryers. A narrow indoor lap pool, fitness center, and barbecue grills are bonuses, as are cheap parking and free Wi-Fi. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better-located apartment-style property, but for a more traditional hotel setup that doesn't lose the location, check out the Quality Hotel Batman's Hill on Collins

Scene

High-rise apartments with excellent location in Melbourne CBD

Serviced apartments in Melbourne are a dime a dozen, and it can be hard to choose between them, but this property stands out for its unbeatable location in downtown. Apartments are in high-rise residential towers, so views are generally good. Check-ins before 9 p.m. are done nearby, but later arrivals have to check in farther afield. This modern, albeit generic, apartment building has a glass-wrapped entrance with indoor plants, city artwork, and hanging lamps, but there's nowhere to sit -- nor are there any bar or restaurant. Power in apartments is activated via room keys, which can be inconvenient for running dishwashers and laundry machines while out, but requesting a spare key usually sorts this. Note, bookings require a minimum two-night stay.

Location

Melbourne CBD location, opposite Southern Cross train station

Travelers choose this property for its stellar location. Southern Cross Railway Station and airport drop-off Skybus terminal are a four-minute walk away, and convenient transport here accompanies excellent dining and shopping. The hotel's Bourke Street is packed with restaurants, cafes, and shops, continuing with Little Bourke and Little Collins Streets either side of it. Rialto Towers' big-name finance, tech, and observation deck are an eight-minute walk, and it's around five more minutes to reach the open-air Bourke Street Mall, Chinatown, and Crown Casino complex. City trams stopping outside are free, and run to Federation Square, MCG's cricket, and other attractions. Supermarkets and Spencer Outlet's shopping are a quick walk. Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport is around 30 minutes away (by car or public transport).

Rooms

Comfortable, self-contained apartments with kitchen and laundry facilities

Contemporary One-, Two-, and Three-Bedroom Apartments are outfitted in pleasant and contemporary decor. White walls and bed linens are offset by multi-tonal blues in embellished or patterned blankets and throw pillows, with a likewise neutral finish in tree-themed artwork and open-plan living and dining areas. Well-furnished sitting areas have sofas, chairs, desks, coffee tables, and decor consisting of artwork, gold vases, and blue bowls. Kitchens are fully-equipped with fridge/freezers, dishwashers, and all necessary cookware. Delivery from nearby restaurants is available, and further comforts of satellite flat-screen TVs, stereos, phones, AC, and free Wi-Fi come standard. On the downside, no safes are provided, and cribs/high chairs incur fees. Unfurnished balconies offer a mostly pleasant city view, but nearby nightclubs are noisy on weekends. Most Two- and Three-Bedroom Apartments offer a second bathroom alongside standard ones, which are light-tiled with stall showers or shower/tub combos, Kudosspa-branded toiletries, and hairdryers. Washer/dryers are located here, with detergent provided. Note, room keys are required to activate power.

Features

Heated indoor pool, tennis courts, and a gym, but no dining options

Limited features here are typical of a self-catering stay. While that means no restaurant, bar, or lounge on-site, wellness amenities are good. The heated indoor lap pool is narrow but sufficient for the number of guests, and a glass ceiling affords a conservatory feel. There are no loungers here though, just a small table and chair set at one end. The gym is bright from floor-to-ceiling mirrors and windows, offering a limited, but modern, array of cardio and resistance equipment (but no free weights). The space opens up onto the property's barbecue terrace, which is the only common seating area offered. Large wooden tables with garden chairs and umbrellas are here, and benches line walls bordered by trimmed hedges and trees. Barbecue equipment is provided, and the space is open until dusk. Two outdoor tennis courts are also available. Staff are available during the day at the nearby check-in office, but only during limited opening hours. Pets are not permitted. Secure, private parking is on-site and well-priced, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
