Bottom Line

The Sterling Boutique Hotel Melaka is a polished three-and-a-half-pearl property that's a 10-minute walk to famous Jonker Street. Featuring 37 rooms and suites, it’s set in a colonial-style building that evokes Old World charm from the outside, though interiors are more modern and business-like. Rooms are clean and equipped with flat-screen cable TVs, free Wi-Fi, and spacious bathrooms. The breakfast room is located on the rooftop, providing excellent views of the city skyline, but it only serves breakfast. Otherwise, features are limited here, and travelers seeking more on-site amenities should consider the nearby Hatten Hotel Melaka, which includes a pool, spa, and fitness center.

The Sterling Boutique Hotel Melaka

Scene

Contemporary interiors and few frills for tourists who will be out exploring

Set inside a colonial-inspired building, The Sterling Boutique Hotel Melaka is one of the more stylish options in the heart of the city. At first glance, it’s imposing, clad completely in white, with a broad, flat rooftop and several balconies around the building. Inside, though, the classic style is mostly abandoned. The lobby is simple yet sharp: a sleek, east-west corridor scattered with comfortable chairs. Dramatic, Old World chandeliers hang overhead, providing a hint of the city’s historic character and adding just the right amount of detail to the otherwise understated entry. That no-frills concept continues throughout the hotel, from the hardwood floors of the breakfast restaurant to the unassuming hallways leading to the guest rooms. All in all, there's not much here beyond the rooms and a restaurant, and the atmosphere is pleasant and calm. It's best for travelers who will be out exploring all day.

Location

Two minutes from Little India, and within a 10-minute walk from Jonker Street

Its prime location near the city center makes the Sterling a desirable choice for anyone who wishes to be within proximity of the area’s most iconic attractions. It’s just a two-minute walk from Little India, which is packed with wall-to-wall Indian retailers, stalls, and restaurants. The Stadhuys, Cheng Ho’s Cultural Museum, and Christ Church are all about six minutes away by foot. Most other popular tourist sights are within a 10-minute walk, including Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, Jonker Street, and A’famosa. The majestic Taming Sari Tower casts its shadow from afar, and is about 13 minutes away from the hotel on foot. Meanwhile, Melaka Airport is about a 20-minute drive.

Rooms

Clean and modern, with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and some units with hot tubs

Rooms are clean, low-key, and modern, if a little on the business side of things when it comes to style. Sedate color palettes include neutrals like mocha, charcoal, and white, along with some splashes of color or metallic hues. Floors are carpeted, and the overall effect is upmarket. Some rooms have a sleeker look, with their luxe leather headboards and stylish black TV cabinets. All units are air-conditioned and include coffeemakers, safes, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with satellite cable.

Standard units, known as Superior Double or Twin Suites, can be smaller, and measure between 20 and 26 square meters (215-280 square feet). Suites offer more room, at 35 and 46 square meters (376-495 square feet), plus additions like extra beds, bar counters, and living rooms with sofas. Bathrooms in all units are chic and fairly spacious, with details like mod vessel or classic antique style sinks, roomy showers, and a decent selection of toiletries. Several previous guests have complained about a lack of hot water and weak shower pressure. Some bathrooms in upgraded units have jetted baths or outdoor hot tubs. Most lack extensive counter space, although the Celebration Suite includes a large marble-top vanity in a more posh, spa-like space.

Features

Lacking in major amenities, though there's a rooftop restaurant with great views

The Sterling Boutique Hotel Melaka is a bit lacking in most major recreational facilities. There’s no pool, spa, or fitness center. Its standout feature is The Loft, a rooftop restaurant that serves breakfast only. Its great location offers incredible views of the city skyline, and that’s by far its greatest trait. Featuring hardwood floors, shaded chandeliers, and both indoor and outdoor seating, the establishment is quite stylish and contemporary, and makes a reliable option for breakfast (not included in all room rates). There’s also a business center equipped with a guest computer, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Parking is also free with a reservation.
