Holiday Inn Mayaguez & Tropical Casino
2701 Hwy 2

Holiday Inn Mayaguez & Tropical Casino is situated on a busy strip of road alongside dozens of chain restaurants and big box stores. The surrounding area is charmless, however, the hotel’s location less than eight minutes from the Mayaguez airport makes it an ideal place to overnight en route to western Puerto Rico's many amazing beaches. Rooms are predictably adorned with simple, modern furnishings typical of the Holiday Inn brand. All feature flat-screen satellite TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning; suites add mini-fridges. The large outdoor pool, modern casino, and late-night daiquiri bar all create a resort-like vibe that draws a steady mix of locals and travelers. The three-pearl Howard Johnson Downtown Mayaguez offers fewer amenities, but a great city center location for less money.

Howard Johnson by Wyndham Mayaguez Downtown
Calle Mendez Vigo 70 Este

Howard Johnson Downtown Mayaguez is a curious blend of a budget chain motel and a historical monastery. The hotel’s proximity to Plaza Colon, and many restaurants and shops, are its biggest asset. Most of the 30 rooms are plain and even a bit dated, with basic amenities, including flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. However, the cramped pool area feels downright claustrophobic, and the surrounding neighborhood and cavernous architecture can prove noisy. While pricier, the Holiday Inn Mayaguez & Tropical Casino offers slightly nicer amenities, plus a full-service casino and a spacious outdoor pool deck.

Mayaguez Resort & Casino
585 Carr 104, Barrio Algarrobos

This hotel has reopened following the impact of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Travelers should note that the island of Puerto Rico wassignificantly impacted by the storm.  The 140-room Mayaguez Resort & Casino is a kid-friendly choice on Puerto Rico's western coast, with a lovely lazy river pool featuring a rock grotto area with waterfalls, a waterslide, and a zero-entry edge with sand. The on-site restaurants offer tasty, authentic Puerto Rican cuisine as well as international and Caribbean choices -- but items are on the pricey side. Rooms are relatively clean, with tiled floors and dark wood accents, but feel a little bare and worn, and the indoor areas as a whole could use upgrading (carpets smell musty, and we noticed a cracked ceiling in the fitness center). The biggest downside, however, may be the lack of an on-site beach; the closest stretch of sand is a five-minute drive away.

Hotel Colonial
14 S Iglesia Street

Hotel Colonial is a charming 29-room budget option housed in a former convent in the heart of downtown Mayaguez. Although the property has undergone plenty of modern updates over the years, many historic architectural details remain, providing a lovely sense of place. Rooms are done in a simple, mostly white colonial style, and feature modern amenities like fast, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and (optional) mini-fridges. However, aside from a small open-air patio and communal breakfast area, features are slim. While slightly more expensive, Howard Johnson Downtown Mayaguez offers three-pearl accommodations with additional amenities, including a wine bar and a pool.
