Bottom Line

For budget travelers seeking super affordable nightly rates and a full suite of resort facilities near services in downtown Pereybere, it doesn’t get much cheaper than the budget Casa Florida Hotel. All 74 rooms are functional and reasonably well-appointed with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and private balconies. Upgraded categories add kitchens/kitchenettes and separate living and dining quarters.  The amenities list checks all the must-have boxes for a tropical vacation: an outdoor pool, a modern bar, a spa, and a breezy restaurant with free breakfast. However, the charmless decor and zero hints of sophistication give everything an entirely functional feel. As an alternative, Mont Choisy Coral Azur Beach Resort adds a beach and hints of modernity for slightly higher rates.

Scene

A thoroughly family-friendly resort with a low-key vibe

The tropical landscaping is enough to remind guests they’re on vacation in a beach town, but large swaths of concrete, dated stucco architecture, and facades that haven’t been pressure washed in years all contribute to a budget look and feel. The social scene is limited almost exclusively to the pool and adjacent bar day and night. The vibe winds down considerably after dark when most families are relaxing together in their rooms, and most adult couples are still out exploring Pereybere’s nightlife. Guests are a mix of every brand of traveler, including couples, families, and singles. The bargain basement pricing means some European travelers visit for weeks or months at a time.

Location

Just off the main tourist strip in downtown Pereybere, one hour from MRU airport

The surrounding Pereybere neighborhood is arguably Mauritius’ most popular with travelers. The hotel is tucked into a residential neighborhood that feels far removed from the tourist hustle. The location is just a block off the bustling B13 coastal road, putting guests within a 10-minute walk of dozens of restaurants, shops, and services. Guests can shop for their optional kitchens/kitchenettes at the modern supermarket less than a five-minute walk away. Pereybere Public Beach, one of the island’s most beautiful, is eight minutes away on foot. Most guests travel through Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), an hour southeast along a series of modern roads.

Rooms

Pleasant rooms with flat-screen TVs, private balconies, and optional kitchens/kitchenettes

Bland color palettes and hard, angular furniture create an aesthetic that falls short of cozy. However, the design and furnishings in every room category are still pleasant and updated. Entry-level Standard Rooms offer tight, one-room layouts, while Superior Rooms upgrade to a nicer decor and a separate tiered living room. Studios can add a dining area and a full kitchen, while Two-Bedroom Apartments offer all the amenities of an efficiency apartment. The list of standard amenities is surprisingly modern: free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges. Bathrooms add tasteful design touches like polished concrete flooring, vessel sinks, and modern glass shower stalls. Hairdryers and bath soap are provided. Furnished balconies are standard, though they only offer views of the admittedly rough landscaping.

Features

A sparkling outdoor pool with a bar, an airy buffet restaurant, and a spa

Features are ample, especially for this price point. At the center of the hotel is a bright freeform pool with a spacious terrace lined with lounge chairs and a waterfall. The adjacent bar is surprisingly modern, with a full cocktail menu and a small space for occasional nightly music performances. The restaurant, Les Camelias, is situated in a breezy, open-air building that doubles as the lobby and reception area. The utilitarian decor and salmon-colored linens all hint at the restaurant’s age. It’s a casual space -- almost to a fault. A free breakfast buffet is served daily, while lunch and dinner are available a la carte. Unfortunately, the food is often reviewed as mediocre. The one-room spa is shoehorned into a standalone building adjacent to the front security gate. It offers a limited treatment menu of traditional Javanese-style massage (using palm and thumb strokes). Other services include facials, mineral baths, and waxing. The gym hidden at the rear of the property is decent and modestly sized with a selection of dated cardio and strength-training equipment, plus free weights. Wi-Fi is free, and we found the service to be reliable throughout the resort. Free self-parking is provided in a large gated lot with 24-hour security.
