Bottom Line

A mid-range condo complex overlooking the Wailea Blue Golf Course, Wailea Ekolu Village Resort attracts families and older couples looking for space to sprawl. The property’s 148 individually owned one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos feature full kitchens, open-concept living spaces, and in-unit laundry facilities, but decor is mostly dated and varies between units. There are two pools and multiple outdoor grilling areas scattered across the manicured grounds, but Wailea Ekolu Village is not within walking distance of the beach. Nearby Wailea Ekahi Village is directly on the sand, and offers similar accommodations with more amenities.

Scene

An older condo property with a quiet atmosphere

Wailea Ekolu Village Resort is a quiet condo complex located in the middle of the Wailea Blue Golf Course. It’s an older property, with dated exteriors; and while decor throughout varies, most rooms could use some upgrades. Despite its age, the property’s grounds are beautifully maintained, featuring manicured green lawns, flowering bougainvillea, and lots of palm trees. Ekolu Village attracts lots of older couples, and families who need space to sprawl. There are two pools here, but there isn’t much else to do. It’s an ideal place for travelers who plan on spending their days exploring the island, though renting a car is necessary.

Location

On the golf course in ritzy Wailea, but not within walking distance of the beach

Considering its location in posh Wailea, Ekolu Village is an affordable option. It’s a great pick for travelers who want to stay in Wailea, but don’t want to pay pricey nightly rates at big names like the Four Seasons, the Fairmont, and the Grand Wailea. But Ekolu’s affordability comes with some drawbacks. The property isn’t within walking distance of the beach, and while some restaurants are nearby, the Shops at Wailea and the Island Gourmet Market are a bit farther (about 15 to 20 minutes on foot). Wailea Ekolu Village is a 30-minute drive from Maui’s Kahului Airport. Wailea is one of Maui’s premier resort areas. It’s known for expensive hotels, year-round sunshine, excellent golf courses, and beautiful beaches. Wailea Beach is south Maui’s most famous stretch of sand, but nearby Makena Beach is also worth visiting. Like all beaches in Hawaii, both Wailea and Makena are open to the public.

Rooms

Individually owned apartment-style units with full kitchens and large balconies

The one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos at Wailea Ekolu Village are individually owned, so decor varies throughout. Some units are attractive and contemporary, while others seem to be stuck in the ’80s. One unit we visited had a beautifully remodeled kitchen with sleek granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances, while another still had white clapboard cabinets. No matter how they’re styled, kitchens are equipped with full-size appliances (including dishwashers, stoves, ovens, and microwaves), cutlery, flatware, and pots and pans. Along with full kitchens, condos have open-concept living and dining spaces, and large outdoor balconies that overlook the golf course, plus some have distant ocean views. Stacked washer/dryers are located in the master bathroom of every unit. Bathrooms have either shower/tub combos or walk-in showers. Air-conditioning, TVs, and coffeemakers are provided. Rooms are housed in two-story buildings, so stairs are required to reach top floor units.

Features

Two pools and a few grilling areas, plus free parking and Wi-Fi

Wailea Ekolu Village doesn’t have the typical resort amenities, lacking dining options, a fitness center, spa, and daily housekeeping. However, there are two pools, and freebies like parking and Wi-Fi. The hotel’s two pools are centrally located on opposite sides of the complex. The property sits on a substantial hill, so one pool is located at the base of the hill, while the other is located at the top. The pools are small, quiet, and surrounded by plastic slatted lounge chairs. Like the rest of the property, the pools are older, but beautifully maintained. There are also multiple outdoor grilling areas scattered across the grounds. Ekolu Village’s free Wi-Fi works well in rooms and around the pools. Guests with cars can park for free in their villa’s designated space(s).
