that’s all decked out in lavish Balinese-style decor, this is about as opposite
of a generic mega-resort as you can get. This adult-only bed-and-breakfast offers an intimate, romantic alternative to busy chain
hotels. Although amenities are limited to a great continental breakfast and a
small, lovely pool, the experience here less about action and more about relaxing and enjoying the great views of the ocean
below (though note there is no beach here). This is the only upscale bed-and-breakfast in Lahaina; the Maui Guest House is also intimate but not nearly as luxe.
Scene
Decked out in imported Balinese dark wood pieces, creating an effortless island-chic
This charming, six-room luxury bed-and-breakfast feels like
the gorgeous home of a friend with great taste. Featuring a breezy open plan,
the hotel is centered around a main common room that faces out onto a small, lovely
pool. Between the guest rooms are open-air passageways that let the breeze
through, lined by gardens, koi ponds and fountains. It’s a little slice of paradise on a gentle
hillside overlooking the ocean below, just a smidgen south of Lahaina. The vibe
is at once elegant and laid-back, presenting a serene island-chic feel that
allows for deep relaxation. This adult-only
property is undeniably romantic and honeymoon-appropriate, with indoor-outdoorbathrooms that allow guests to shower under the stars. The name Ho’oilo means winter, as the hotel was created for
the owners to retreat to in those cold winter months. The entire building is built and decorated
in an Indonesian style. Most of the wood, the decorations and even the and building
materials were imported from Bali. Throughout
the rooms and hallways, elements include hand-carved teak-wood columns,
luxurious wooden daybeds filled with pillows, and delicate paper lanterns. The beautiful common room has high, vaulted ceilings, stone statues of Hindu characters on display, plush chaise lounges, and a collection of books
and games. With just six rooms at the hotel, the atmosphere is personal and
intimate, and the property’s friendly hosts are always close by to give a
restaurant recommendation or book a tour.
Location
Nestled in the mountains just south of Lahaina
Ho’oilo House is perched on a gentle hillside at the foot of
the West Maui mountains, just south of Lahaina. One side of the property faces up towards the
mountains, which are often shrouded in mist, while the other side has panoramic
vistas out to the ocean. On clear days, you can see the island of Lanai not far
off the shore. The hotel is located in a very quiet, suburban neighborhood, and
there aren’t any shops or restaurants in walking distance, so guests will need
a rental car. The nearest beach is Launiupoko Beach Park, just a five-minute drive
down the road (though it's not really close enough to walk to.) The bustling shops and bars of downtown Lahaina are
just a 12-minute drive away, and it’s a 40-minute trip to the airport.
Rooms
Beautifully decorated, romantic rooms with private outdoor showers
There are just six rooms available, all beautifully decorated
individually with Indonesian furnishings. The entrance to each room is marked by
traditional Bali-style doors inlaid with tiny, intricate mother-of-pearl
designs. Large sliding doors let in plenty of light, and open onto a private
covered lanai with comfortable seating and peaceful garden or ocean views. Each
room’s custom decor includes unique pieces such as carved Balinese instruments,
wooden statues, and paper lanterns. The color palette includes warm, earthy
tones of brown, yellow, deep red, and slate blue. King or queen-size beds offer
soft, high-quality linens, and flat-screen TVs are subtly hidden away behind
the closet doors. Rooms have mini-fridges and iPod docks can be requested. A highlight of each room is the large open indoor-outdoor
bathroom with a unique soaking tub. One room has a hammered copper tub and sink
basin, while another has a beautiful black granite soaking tub. The bathtubs
and showers each have a cool one-of-a-kind feature: The spouts are made of stone
carved heads of Balinese Hindu gods, with water spouting out the mouth. The
outdoor showers feature a pebble floor and lava stone walls, open to the sky so
guests can stargaze while taking a shower under the moonlight.
Features
Light on amenities, but full of charm and tranquility
In true bed-and-breakfast style, a hearty continentalbreakfast is available in the common room every morning. The spread includes fresh
fruits, cereal, muffins and toast with local jams, yogurt and fresh juices.
Gluten-free breads can be made upon request. A great selection of tea and
coffee are available in the common room at any time of day. Guests can have
breakfast in the lounge area or next to the small pool. Two lovely fountainfeatures pour into the idyllic pool, which has views down the hill and out over
the ocean below. A few comfortable, padded lounge chairs are placed around the
pool and on the grassy lawn. On one side of the lawn, there’s a peace meditation
gazebo that looks out toward the mountains. There is no spa, but in-room spa and massage treatments can
be arranged. The hotel aims to be very eco-friendly. For example, nice plastic
water bottles are given to guests use with the water cooler, instead of disposable
bottled water. And about 80 percent of the hotel’s power comes from its solar
field. There is a small orchard on the property with fresh fruit trees, including
mangos, lemons, and more. Free Wi-Fi and parking is provided.
