Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Park Plaza Suites has a great location, just a minute’s walk from a beach and the upmarket town’s marina, but that might not be enough to make up for its poor guest feedback. Past guests have noted that the hotel is far from clean, and that its 51 rooms, although sizable and with flat-screen TVs, are dated and can be poorly maintained. Although the hotel doesn’t have a pool, it does have a small gym and hot tub, and guests get a free, simple breakfast. Travelers looking for somewhere cleaner and better-maintained may want to check out the nearby Melia Marbella Banus.

Scene

Traditional hotel with rich, classic decor, but maintenance issues

The Park Plaza Suites makes an impression with its Old-World feel, primarily in the lobby where there are a floor mosaic, ornately carved wood in a rich, reddish hue, a frescoed ceiling, and stained-glass ceiling accent. Leather Chesterfield sofas and wingback armchairs with floral prints sit next to classical artwork and a painted screen. At the far end is the bar, a curved affair with burgundy leather stools and a black baby grand piano in one corner. The restaurant is decorated similarly, but unfortunately, this grandeur feels more dated than classic in rooms. Additionally, many past guests have complained of rampant maintenance and cleanliness issues. Mostly groups of friends come here for a prime spot on the coast in the smart Puerto Banus area.

Location

Prime location between Plaza Beach and the marina

The Park Plaza Suites occupies some prime real estate near the ritzy Puerto Banus coastline. Only a minute’s walk in one in one direction leads to a golden sandy beach, while a similar distance in the other direction leads to the world-famous Puerto Banus Marina and the many shops, restaurants, and nightclubs that nestle the streets leading off from it. Another larger beach is an eight-minute walk away, and loungers can be rented from either. The Aloha Golf Club is a seven-minute drive from the hotel, while the center of Marbella, and its bustling old town, are a 15-minute drive away. Expect transfers to Malaga Airport to take between 40 and 60 minutes by car.

Rooms

Spacious rooms, but dated and in need of repair

The 51 rooms at the Park Plaza Suites are large, but they're dated and lacking the striking accents found in common areas. They have white walls, tile or faux-wood floors, and chintzy red-and-cream or blue-and-beige bedspreads that match the drapes, chair upholstery, and throw pillows. Tiffany lamps and gilded artwork help dress up the spaces. Unfortunately, many guests have complained of dirty and poorly kept rooms. Most rooms have furnished balconies -- some quite large -- but others have reported missing chairs. On the upside, bathrooms are modern, decorated with attractive marble, and have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries. All rooms have small seating areas, air-conditioning, desks, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and closets with electronic safes. Suites add separate living rooms and Nespresso coffee machines. These bathrooms have separate shower cubicles, dual sinks, and bathtubs with hydrotherapy jets. Wi-Fi usage requires a steep daily charge.

Features

Free buffet breakfast, bar, hot tub, and old gym

The Park Plaza Suites has a decent list of amenities, though it's lacking a swimming pool. Guests generally appreciate the free breakfast buffet, which includes continental and cooked options, and is served in the wood-paneled dining room. A la carte meals are served here, and a bar offers drinks and light snacks throughout the day and into the night. There is no spa at the hotel, but an indoor hot tub is available. A small gym is on-site, and while decently equipped, the machines are old. Wi-Fi and on-site parking are both available for a fee.
