The Sliema Marina Hotel is a budget, '60s-era hotel with revamped interiors set overlooking Sliema's lively waterfront promenade. The hotel is sandwiched between two fast-food outlets and conveniently located opposite the bus station and Valletta ferry terminal. Its 78 guest rooms vary from bright and spacious with lovely sea-view balconies, to small and gloomy rooms with no views at all. Vistas from the breakfast room are superb, as are those from the rooftop terrace, which also features a whirlpool. Expect to pay extra for breakfast, though Wi-Fi is free and there's a cute Italian restaurant on the first floor. Travelers looking for a proper pool can pay a little more for one at the Rocca Nettuno Suites, which also has suites with cooking facilities.
Scene
Seafront hotel with contemporary interiors and superb harbor views
With its weather-worn, peach-toned facade and dated late-'60s architecture, first impressions of the Sliema Marina Hotel are not impressive. Entrance is through the hotel's street-front Italian cafe, and into the contemporary (albeit slightly cheesy) lobby that's composed of zebra-print chairs, white-glass chandeliers, and white-on-cream decor with silver accents. While most of the property was updated in 2011, corridors are still dated and the two elevators servicing the property's eight floors are tiny. Views over the harbor are a real strength, with particularly impressive panoramas from the hotel's breakfast room and spacious rooftop terrace. Clientele are primarily vacationing couples, plus occasional families, mostly hailing from the British Isles.
Location
Overlooking Sliema's buzzy waterfront promenade opposite Valletta ferry port
The hotel has a prime location right on Sliema's buzzy waterfront promenade, just opposite the bus terminal and ferry port that links to Valletta in 25 minutes. The hotel sits between a McDonald's and a Burger King, and there are numerous bars and restaurants within walking distance. Familiar British high-end stores, such as Marks & Spencer, are five minutes away on foot. The Point Shopping Mall is a seven-minute walk and the flat rocky beaches and various lidos are within 10 minutes on foot. Malta International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Street-facing rooms open to balconies overlooking the water
The hotel has 78 guest rooms, all of which were updated in 2011 and are decorated with plush, contemporary styling in silver and metallic purples alongside wood-veneer flooring and velour fabrics. While modern and clean, the design can be a bit disjointed. Note that some rooms are small and those on lower levels can be prone to traffic noise. Street-facing rooms open to balconies with sea views, which are particularly impressive from the higher floors. Other rooms lack balconies and overlook a dingy inner courtyard or rear buildings. Amenities include 20- or 32-inch flat-screen TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, wall-mounted hairdryers, and electronic safes. Superior Rooms add mini-fridges and seating areas. In-room Wi-Fi is available free of charge, though connection can vary. Tiled bathrooms are clean and functional, with shower/tub combos and simple toiletries.
Features
Superb harbor views from rooftop terrace with whirlpool tub
Most guests choose this hotel for the convenient location and low rates, so there's little to do on-site. The buffet breakfast is not included as standard, but it's a nice spread of hot and cold items, served in the eighth-floor dining room with spectacular water views. The ground-floor Oggi Cafe also serves a menu of largely Italian favorites, including pizzas and a cocktail menu with typical Italian aperitifs. A spacious terra-cotta tile rooftop terrace features a whirlpool (only open in peak season), plus a few loungers, and the best sea-view vantage point in the hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
