Bottom Line

The 28-room San Andrea Hotel is a pleasant value property situated along the Xlendi Bay promenade and a one-minute walk from St. Andrew's Divers Cove. Owners of this family-run hotel receive praise, and views of the sea from a charming top-floor terrace are excellent. Comfy rooms are dated and simple, featuring air-conditioning, balconies, and shower/tub combos. Past guests largely agree it's worth upgrading to a room with sea views. On-site amenities are limited to a bay-view restaurant that serves free breakfasts and free Wi-Fi. On the downside, nearby construction has caused noise complaints during the day and mini-fridges must be requested and require a fee. Travelers wanting a pool should consider Saint Patrick's Hotel.

Scene

Welcoming seafront family-run hotel with great rooftop terrace

The San Andrea is a family-run hotel whose owners, Sharon and Jason, receive rave reviews from guests for the warm atmosphere. Right on Xlendi Bay's waterfront, the hotel takes advantage of its stunning location by providing sea views from several vantage points and around half of the rooms. A favorite spot to take in these vistas is the fifth-floor rooftop terrace -- the property has an elevator -- that's decked out with furniture. The design throughout is simple and dated, but its skylit interior spiral staircase and wrought-iron accents are in sync with the Mediterranean surroundings. Overall, this is an excellent pick for low-key travelers who aren't looking for a ton of on-site amenities. However, be aware that past guests have complained of nearby construction noise.

Location

In a small lively village, right on the waterfront

On a street corner overlooking Xlendi Bay and its promenade, the San Andrea's location is scenic and excellent. Small bars and restaurants are nearby and a mini-market is next door. Unfortunately, several guests have also complained of nearby construction that stars early in the day. A diving center is across the street and St. Andrew's Diver's Cove is a one-minute walk, plus there are plenty of tucked away coves and lagoons within a 10-minute walk. A bus stop outside runs to the city of Victoria, which takes about 10 minutes. A public parking lot is nearby for those with cars. The Ta' Pinu Shrine, limestone Azure Window, and Ġgantija Temples are all within a 20-minute drive, as is Gozo Ferry Terminal, for access to Malta's main island. Xlendi Bay isn't a proper beach, so for that, head to Ramla Beach a 20-minute drive away. Malta International Airport is 90 minutes away by car, including a ferry ride.

Rooms

Small, simple, and dated rooms with balconies, some with fantastic bay views

Rooms are small and basic, though comfortable and well-maintained. They feature dated decor such as simple wood furniture, red patterned bedspreads, curtains, and stool cushions, and white walls without artwork. Their best feature is the furnished balcony, 12 of which have bay views -- past guests largely agree it's worth upgrading to one with a sea vista. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with flat-screen TVs, closets with safes, and desks. Mini-fridges and kettles can be rented for fees. Beige bathrooms have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and basic toiletries.

Features

Free breakfast, a restaurant, rooftop terrace and friendly family owners

Protected by a canvas awning, the semi-outdoor Zafiro Restaurant directly faces the bay and has a terrace for al fresco meals. All rates include a free breakfast of cereals, breads, pastries, fruit, and yogurt, plus a few cooked options. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, serving lots of fresh fish dishes. The top-floor terrace is a popular spot to take in the views, and it's equipped with some loungers and chairs. Some travelers may be disappointed by the lack of a pool. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
