Bottom Line

The Allegro Hotel is a simple property in St. Julian's that offers travelers affordable accommodations a short walk from the waterfront. The three-pearl property has a small outdoor pool and a sundeck on the rooftop, and serves a free basic breakfast buffet in a bright dining room with ample seating, but there's little else in terms of features. The hotel's 31 guest rooms are dated, though they're well-maintained and spacious, and most have small Juliette balconies for fresh air and natural light. Standard amenities include wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, tidy bathrooms with walk-in showers, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Travelers looking for a hotel that's closer to the waterfront for a similar rate can consider Rokna.

Scene

Small hotel with a rooftop pool for budget-minded leisure travelers

The Allegro Hotel is geared toward budget-conscious leisure travelers who want to be situated in St. Julian's and don't mind the walk to the waterfront. An entryway with a double set of glass doors open into a narrow lobby with a pair of brown leather couches and a small wooden reception desk at the far end of the room. Behind it, an open staircase with ornate banisters winds up the five stories through the core of the building. On the top, a rooftop terrace covered in artificial turf houses a sundeck and a small pool, and guests tend to gather here, and in the hotel's bright breakfast room.

Location

In a quiet neighborhood, a short walk to the marina and the beach

The hotel is on a quiet street within walking distance of Saint Julian’s nightlife and restaurants, but far enough away to be free of traffic noise. The property is near Spinola Bay, about a 10-minute walk to the man-made beach at St. George’s Bay and to Portomaso Marina. There's a bus stop down the block (Ross) for access to sights across the island, but it’s an easy walk to the waterfront's bars, cafes, and to Love Monument. Guests can find more entertainment and dining options a short walk in the other direction in neighboring Paceville. Dragonara Casino is also within walking distance. Silema is 20 minutes by public transport and St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta is a 20-minute car ride. Driving to the Hagar Qim Temples takes 30 minutes. Malta International Airport is a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Dated rooms with flat-screen TVs and many have balconies, but no kettles

The hotel's guest rooms have aging tile floors and a dated decor with basic wood furniture. Red curtains add a pop of color, but the walls are otherwise bare. All rooms have either two or three twin beds (that can be pushed together), small desks, wardrobes, and bedside tables with reading lamps. Most have small balconies and Superior Rooms add French windows. Free Wi-Fi and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs are standard, but there are no kettles or mini-fridges. In-room safes are an added fee. The tiled bathrooms are a little cramped but tidy, with small walk-in showers with removable rainfall showerheads and old tube-style hairdryers, but there are no toiletries.

Features

Rooftop pool, free continental breakfast and Wi-Fi throughout, but no full restaurant

Features are limited at this budget hotel, but there's a free continental breakfast that's served buffet-style in a room next to to the lobby, with ample seating for a number of guests. There's also a small rooftop pool with loungers set across a sundeck of artificial turf. Potted plants decorate the corners and railings, with views mostly of neighboring buildings. A pavilion strung with colored lights provides a little shade in one corner, and there are a few white plastic tables. Free Wi-Fi is standard throughout.
