Bottom Line

The five-pearl Constance Halaveli is almost too good to be true. With villas dotting a deck extending out to the Indian Ocean, and pristine water and beach framing the property, the private island resort lives up to its photographs. Little touches, like single roses that accompany 24-hour room service, speak to the hotel’s attention to detail and service. The 86 airy villas have lovely amenities like wine coolers and terraces with plunge pools -- but some are in a garden on the beach and not over-the-water. Reachable only by seaplane or speedboat, the location is secluded, but a diving center, water sports activities, spa, gym, scenic dining options, and a kids' center provide plenty to do. This is the only hotel option on Halavei, so there isn’t any competition here (prices will reflect this and all-inclusive rates are availble).

Scene

Breathtaking and romantic island resort -- a magnet for honeymooning couples

It’s no wonder so many guests refer to this private island resort as “paradise.” Surrounded by shining blue water, soft sandy grounds, and vibrant foliage, with villas scattered on docks over the ocean, the property is positively idyllic. Facilities are modern, but have a distinctive beachy feel to them, from the open-air lobby under a thatched roof to the natural materials used extensively to furnish most of the rooms and common areas. Several amenities right by the water make for stunning views. Despite often being fully booked, the resort is sprawling enough to allow guests plenty of privacy and quiet in their respective spaces. Breezy, laid-back, but also incredibly romantic, this is a quintessential honeymoon destination, and high-rolling couples make up a hefty percentage of the clientele.

Location

Jaw-droppingly beautiful private island location; the property takes up all of Halaveli

Although this is one of several resorts on the North Ari Atoll, it’s private location on Halaveli is only accessible via a 90-minute speedboat ride or a 25-minute seaplane ride from Male Airport (arrangeable through the hotel), so guests should prepare to feel somewhat secluded -- though that's exactly what most guests are looking for when they book a private island stay. The resort is essentially the entire destination.

Rooms

Large Water or Beach Villas with private decks or balconies, raftered roofs, and stunning views

Rooms are either 1076-square-foot, circular Water Villas that “float” on a long boardwalk over the lagoon, or Beach Villas of various sizes by the gardens, starting at 3767 square feet. Guests should note that the boardwalk is fairly long, so Water Villas on the far end are a considerable walk back to some amenities. All villas have a modern, but beachy, aesthetic with wooden floors and high, raftered ceilings, and neutral-toned furniture including sofas and coffee tables. The airy Water Villas incorporate some ocean-inspired blue pillows and linens, and Beach Villas go for a slightly earthier look, with warm lamps and rust-colored accent walls. Several Beach Villas also have additional bedrooms with bunk beds for children. All villas have furnished terraces or decks with plunge pools.

Rooms are all air-conditioned and come with 42-inch TVs, desks, safes, and free and fast Wi-Fi. Coffeemakers, tea-making equipment with a solid variety of teabags, minibars, and mini wine coolers are also provided.

Water Villa bathrooms are impressively large, with double sinks, large vanity mirrors, and spacious walk-in showers with handheld and rainfall showerheads. There are also separate tubs near the sink area, which are lovely but don’t allow for much privacy with their open layout. Beach Villa bathrooms don’t look as luxurious, but are clean, with lovely open-air bathroom layouts. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided in all bathrooms.

Features

Excellent restaurants, private beach, gorgeous infinity pool, and free breakfast

Features here are as luxurious as the villas and definitely match the price point. All four restaurants -- two of which also include bars -- get raves from guests thanks to good food and pleasant ambience. Jahaz has an eye-catching array of ceiling lights, plus cheery orange seat cushions and optional outdoor seating with a fire pit. The international buffet offerings are vast, especially during breakfast (included with all packages) and evening barbecues are often accompanied by live music. Jing serves Asian/European fusion fare in incredibly romantic surroundings on the boardwalk, directly overlooking the ocean. Meeru is another romantic option, serving grilled items and seafood right on the beach. Kaika Sushi bar is casual, with sand floors and bright turquoise seating. Dress codes do apply. Twenty-four hour room service is available.

The large infinity pool overlooking the beach is gorgeous, surrounded by pebbles, sun beds, and deck chairs. The beach itself is also beautiful, with several areas for lounging as well as activities like canoeing, windsurfing, diving, and yoga -- though several of these activities come with hefty fees.

Top-notch wellness features at the U Spa by Constance include a fully-equipped gym (charmingly housed in a building with raftered ceilings) with Kinesis equipment. There are a sauna, steam room, plunge pools, yoga areas, beauty salon, and treatment rooms where organic products are used. Tennis courts are available. The Constance Kids' Club provides activities, food, and babysitting services (for fees) for children.

Other services include same-day laundry and an on-site doctor. Instead of a business center, a sunny Courtesy Lounge offers a TV, library, and a computer. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. The boutique sells beachy clothes and jewelry. Weddings are popular here, and the resort offers full wedding packages.
