Bottom Line

The three-pearl Room Mate Lola is a 50-room boutique in Malaga, located a 10- to 15-minute walk from the town center and beach. Guest rooms and common areas throughout the hotel are stylish and modern, many with a monochromatic color scheme. All rooms are equipped with marble bathrooms, minibars, and flat-screen TVs, though they suffer occasionally from noise. The property lacks most standard features, as there's no pool, full restaurant, gym, or bar. Amenities are limited to a quality breakfast buffet served late, a meeting room, and free Wi-Fi throughout. With little-to-no entertainment features, the clientele here is predominantly adults and couples rather than families with children. Travelers looking for more on-site features may prefer AC Hotel Malaga Palacio by Marriott.

Scene

Boutique property with sleek, black-and-white design throughout

Esteemed interior designer Lorenzo Castillo decorated the spaces of Room Mate Lola, so it's no wonder that the hotel has an artsy and modern style from virtually every angle. Even its exterior is thoughtfully executed, with subtle but eye-catching features such as patterned etched glass on the front-facing windows. Interiors are more striking, as the spacious lobby is furnished with slate-gray flooring, a zebra-print bench, and royal-blue coffee tables. The adjacent breakfast room is a sleek, monochromatic space with chic patterned couches and mirrored lamp stands. The only other public space is a two-tier "Chill-Out" room with velvet sectional sofas, black walls, and black-and-white framed prints. It's not all gray scale though, as pops of color are found in the rooms and in the unexpectedly bright-pink-and-white-striped meeting room. The lack of leisure and entertainment features mean the vibe is generally peaceful and best for adults.

Location

10- to 15-minute walk to sites, restaurants, and the beach

A quick 18-minute drive from Malaga Airport, Room Mate Lola is in a convenient, central location in Malaga. However, because it is situated in an area surrounded by restaurants and bars, nighttime noise can sometimes be an issue for some guests. The location is hard to beat, though, as guests are within walking distance of many entertainment options and tourist attractions. The beach is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel, while the city center is around 10 minutes. Popular sights such as the Picasso Museum (13-minute walk) and the Contemporary Art Center of Malaga (five-minute walk) are both within easy reach.

Rooms

Modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes

Guest rooms at Room Mate Lola have just as much character as the rest of the hotel. Their sleek style starts in the hallway: Room doors are jet-black and have emblazoned numbers in giant silver font. Each of the 50 rooms and suites have a similar modern aesthetic, employing lots of black-and-white furnishings with chrome accents and gray floors. While some maintain a monochromatic look, others have bright pops of yellow, blue, or green. All rooms have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, well-stocked and reasonably priced minibars, safes, and flat-screen TVs. Lovely bathrooms have beige marble floors, white walls, and green marble vanities and shower interiors. All bathrooms have bidets, half-glass-enclosed shower/tub combos, free bath products, and hairdryers. Note that some guests have complained of noise from inside and outside the hotel.

Features

No pool or full breakfast, but long breakfast hours and free Wi-Fi

This boutique property lacks many of the expected facilities: There are no pool, fitness center, full restaurant, or spa facilities. Guests can, however, eat a quality buffet-style breakfast until late (noon during our visit). Room Mate Lola also offers free and reliable Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, and there is a meeting room on-site. Additionally, staff can help arrange bicycle and car rentals.
