Hotel and room decor lacks character
Immediate neighborhood lacks restaurants
The 179-room Monte Malaga Hotel -- part of the small Spanish Monte chain -- has a generic chain feel, as if it could be set anywhere, not necessarily in coastal Spain. Rooms and public areas are spacious, and the meeting facilities are well-appointed, but tourists may find themselves a bit too far away from the main drag (a 15 to 20-minute walk is required to reach the city center and major sights). There is a big indoor pool (heated in winter months) and spa with sauna and steam room, but views are only of the industrial port and there are few restaurants in the immediate area.
Scene
A spacious chain hotel
Both the exterior and lobby of the Monte Malaga Hotel look like they belong to an office building in a business district, as opposed to a beachside town in coastal Spain. There are plenty of sofas and chairs and a comfortable lobby bar for socializing or conducting business, but the design and architecture lacks character and warmth. Clean and contemporary, the hotel is situated five minutes from the train station with quick access to the airport, but the sea view is actually a view of an industrial port, interesting, but not picturesque.
Location
15-20 minutes from city center, views of the port
The Monte Malaga is located a 15 to 20-minute walk from the shopping streets and tourist attractions of Malaga. The train station is five minutes away on foot, which makes the hotel easy to reach from the Malaga airport, and convenient for taking day trips to other locations. The immediate area is industrial, and the nearby streets are not tourist-oriented, but there are a few restaurants, bars, and shops to be found in the back streets around the hotel -- ask for directions from the front desk.
Rooms
Comfortable and spacious, but generic
The rooms at the Monte Malaga are spacious and spotlessly clean, but the decor lacks character and veers toward the generic. Beds are large and comfortable, and there are flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. All rooms have in-room safes, minibars, sound systems, and a pillow menu, as well as large desks fit for work, not just show, in consideration of the business traveler. Rooms on higher floors have an interesting, if not beachy, view of the port. Bathrooms have pretty glass countertops and good quality toiletries.
Features
Year-round pool, spa, and fitness center
One of the standout features of this hotel is the glassed in and heated pool. Comfortable sun beds surround the pool -- a perfect place to relax during siesta. The spa has a sauna, Turkish bath, massage therapy, and a nice locker room. The fitness center is adequate but on the small side. There is a reading and TV room with comfortable tables and armchairs; games are available. The buffet breakfast (surcharge) and bar/restaurant are unremarkable. The underground parking garage costs extra, but is convenient; reserve ahead.
