  • Relaxing, upscale spa with treatment rooms and salon services

  • Narrow windows make rooms a little dark

  • Overall not up to InterContinental standards

Bottom Line

The InterContinental used to be popular with celebrities and well-heeled travelers during the 20th century, but unfortunately its golden days are long gone. Rooms are spacious yet dated, with traditional decor that is more old-fashioned than classic, and narrow windows that don’t let in much light. On-site amenities -- from the fitness center to the restaurants and the pool -- are numerous yet a little rough around the edges, with older-looking decor and equipment. The spa, however, feels fresh and relaxing. Location adjacent to famous malls in Makati is a plus, but the property is overall not up to par with other InterContinental hotels. Nearby Holiday Inn & Suites Makati offers more bang for the buck and newer facilities.

Scene

An older InterContinental property in need of a facelift

Despite having been around for over 45 years, the InterContinental is still one of the big names in the hotel industry in Manila. The property opened in 1969 as the first 5-star hotel in Makati, and quickly became the preferred destination for the international jet set. However, over the last few years the lack of timely investment and the arrival of many other luxury hotels to Makati have relegated the InterContinental to the bottom of the list of luxury properties. Its dated rooms and aging facilities are not on par with other newer hotels in the area, and certainly not up to the brand’s standards. Still, it does offer a few nice perks, such as a relaxing spa with treatments and salon services; a large pool, and outstanding service.

Location

Adjacent to several renowned shopping malls in central Makati

The hotel is located adjacent to Glorietta, a shopping and entertainment area in Makati, chock-full of malls and restaurants. Even though the hotel is on the corner of two main thoroughfares, traffic noise can’t be heard from inside the hotel. While this location is convenient for business travelers and those looking to go shopping, travelers interested in seeing the historic sights of Manila may want to note that major attractions such as Intramuros, Fort Santiago, University of Santo Tomas, Rizal Park, and the Manila Cathedral are all about a 20-minute drive from the hotel. The airport can be reached in 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with dated decor

The InterContinental’s 332 rooms are spotless and fairly spacious, with at least a small seating area with a couch and a table. They used to be some of the most luxurious in town, but despite the 2006 renovations and the mix of classic and contemporary furniture, they now look more dated than elegant or stylish. Details such as plastic shower curtains instead of glass doors, and a few underwhelming technologies add to the feel that the hotel is in need of an urgent facelift. In-room amenities, however, are on par with other upscale hotels, and include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and Agraria toiletries. Although rooms have long walls on the façade side of the building, windows are narrow, which makes the spaces somewhat dark. Suites offer more space; butler service; freebies such as evening cocktail hour and lunch snacks; a larger bathroom with a separate shower and tub; and access to the top-floor Club InterContinental Lounge. Turndown service is standard in all rooms.

Features

A free-form pool, a fitness center, a spa, and one of the largest ballrooms in Manila

The hotel is known for hosting large events and corporate meetings. It features not only seven fully equipped meeting rooms, but also a huge ballroom for up to 800 guests. Those in town for business may also find the staffed business center and the free Wi-Fi convenient amenities. Prince Albert Rotisserie offers French and international cuisine in an attractive space with blue velvet chairs, wood wall panelling, and plush carpeting. Jeepney Café serves up a solid breakfast buffet -- but the space feel somewhat generic, with orange and green upholstered chairs, and basic cafeteria tables. The large free-form pool is attractive and relaxing, with lush tropical gardens around it, as well as umbrellas and padded loungers. It doesn’t feel as upscale as those found in other similarly priced hotels, but it is a nice spot for a lazy afternoon. Adjacent to the pool is Sol y Sombra, a small bar offering tropical drinks. The fitness center offers a wide array of cardio and strength-training machines, but most are a little dated. Suriya Spa is probably the highlight here, with a soothing vibe, attractive treatment cabins, and salon services.
