Bottom Line

The Sol de Alcudia Apartments is a family-friendly, three-pearl apartment complex with a fun, contemporary vibe. It's located a short stroll from Port d'Alcudia's sandy bay and nightlife district. The 142 apartments are bright and modern with up to three bedrooms, plus kitchenettes and balconies. Some feature lake views, though others are prone to street noise. The pool terrace provides a lively, if sometimes overcrowded space with poolside activities, a snack bar, splash pool, and surprisingly good buffet restaurant. For a bigger pool terrace and more activities for the kids, the BQ Delfin Azul Hotel is a strong contender.

Scene

Bright and contemporary apartment hotel that's popular with families

From the outside, there's little to distinguish the Sol de Alcudia Apartments from the numerous other apartment hotels in the area. On the inside, it's a different story, thanks to a bright and airy reception area complete with high ceilings, funky red seating, and playful contemporary design features that create a fun and welcoming vibe. The complex was renovated in 2013, and most of it still feels fresh and modern, with just some of the outside spaces lacking a certain polish. The almost exclusively British clientele leans mostly towards families with kids, so expect plenty of lively splashing around the pool and poolside activities throughout the day. That said, the atmosphere mellows outside of the school holidays, when vacationing couples make up the bulk of the guests.

Location

Within five minutes' walk of Port d'Alcudia beach and nightlife

The complex is located towards the south end of the popular and buzzy resort of Port d'Alcudia, set on Majorca's northeast coast. It is set an almost 10-minute drive from the resort center, and there are plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops in the surrounding area. The lively nightlife strip of Avenida Pere Mas i Reus is just a couple blocks away. The start of the resort's long stretch of sandy beach is also a five-minute walk away for some particularly calm and shallow water. Family-friendly fun can be also be had at the nearby Hidropark water park, a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive. Farther afield is the pretty town of Alcudia, 12 minutes by car. Situated at the opposite end of the island, the capital of Palma and its Palma de Mallorca Airport are up to an hour by road.

Rooms

Updated apartments with kitchenettes and furnished balconies or terraces

Each of the 142 apartments was updated in 2013, and the renovation still shows through smart modern styling that includes light wood furniture, crisp white walls, blue bedding, and wood-effect paneling; only the tile floors look truly dated. Apartments come in four configurations: Studio, One-, Two-, and Three-Bedroom units. All apartments come with kitchenettes with small refrigerators, microwaves, electric burners, toasters, and old-fashioned kettles. Plates, cutlery, and glassware are provided. Lounge areas include 32-inch flat-screen TVs (or 22-inch TVs in Studios) and sofa beds. Old-style safes and Wi-Fi are both available for a fee.All units open to furnished balconies or terraces that either overlook the street or pool. Some higher-level units also have views of the nearby lake. It's no surprise that some street-facing rooms are prone to noise from local nightlife. Bathrooms are clean and come with shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and simple toiletries. Pedestal sinks don't provide a lot of storage for toiletries.

Features

Swimming pool with poolside bar and a quality buffet restaurant

The hotel's outdoor freeform swimming pool is large enough that it rarely feels crowded. However, the surrounding sun terrace fills up fast during peak summer months. There's a circular splash pool for children and poolside activities for much of the day. There isn't a specific kids' club, though the hotel hosts a mini-disco most nights, as well as fun acts like magicians and parrot shows. The main dining room serves buffet-style breakfast and dinner. The poolside bar offers a la carte meals and snacks. Past guests report high-quality food and low prices. Guests also have free access to a small fitness room outfitted with four cardio machines, a weight-training machine, and some low-impact equipment like yoga mats. Bikes with child carrier seats are available to rent.
