The Romantic Hotel is a value-level property set on a quiet stretch overlooking Pollensa's wide sandy beach. The hotel reopened as adult-only after 2015 renovations, which gave the interiors a charming, beach house vibe. The 78 rooms are tastefully decorated and outfitted with small flat-screen TVs, work desks, and air-conditioning, plus most feature sea-view balconies. There's little beyond the rooms besides a restaurant, where food can be inconsistent, and a bar with a pleasant beach-view terrace. All in all, it's a charming, budget-friendly option great for couples happy to keep it simple. The Hotel Villa Singala is on the other side of the bay and also offers affordable -- albeit a little more dated -- rooms, with the addition of a small pool.
Scene
Unfussy adult-only hotel with charming beach house vibe
Part of a family-run chain dating from the '60s, the Romantic Hotel went adults only in 2016, creating a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. Clientele are unsurprisingly almost entirely couples, especially those looking for a value stay away from the typical packaged resort. Situated behind a line of mature palm trees is the nondescript, four-storied Romantic Hotel. Simplicity seems to be the key at this unpretentious property, with the reception area comprising little beyond a wooden desk and a couple of chairs. A reed-weave ceiling and white shuttered doors add a beach house vibe that continues through most of the hotel. Renovations in 2015 replaced tired interiors with a tasteful combination of minimalist white decor, natural wood floors, and stylishly contemporary, low-profile furniture in mostly neutral tones. Attractive pops of yellow in throw pillows and flower vases give the spaces a cheerful ambience. There's nothing in the way of grounds or gardens, not even a pool, but the hotel makes the most of a front patio with raised wood decking and plenty of seating.
Location
Quiet beachfront setting a stroll from Pollensa resort center
The hotel is located toward the south end of Majorca's popular resort town of Port de Pollensa, in the northeast of the island at the end of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Set on the seafront road that stretches along much of the resort town, the hotel is just across the street from a wide strip of sandy beach and the Bay of Pollensa's clear waters. While there are a couple restaurants within a short stroll, the resort center's marina, pine-shaded promenade, and most of the town's dining is a 10- to 15-minutes walk away. Around a 20-minute drive away is the unspoiled beach of Formentor, and stunning views from the headland beyond. Palma -- with its beautiful old town -- can be reached in just under an hour by car, as can the Palma de Mallorca Airport.
Rooms
Bright, contemporary, and simple rooms, most with sea-view balconies
All 78 of the hotel's guest rooms received a makeover in 2015, resulting in fresh and simple styling that combines wood floors, minimalist furniture, and muted earth tones. All rooms open to furnished balconies, and the majority have lateral sea views; a few have full-frontal panoramas, though some overlook the unattractive rear. While the area is generally quiet, thin walls and poor soundproofing mean sound does filter between rooms. Amenities are basic, comprising small wall-mounted flat-screen TVs (with a few English-speaking channels), remote control air-conditioning units, and old-fashioned safes that require a fee. In-room Wi-Fi is not generally available, though it can be picked up in lower-level rooms near the bar. Bathrooms are small but modern and clean, with step-in showers, wall-mounted hairdryers, and generic toiletries.
Features
Restaurant offering buffet breakfast and dinner, and a beach-view bar
A straightforward breakfast buffet (comprising the usual cereals, bread, fruits, dispenser juice, coffee, and a couple of hot dishes) is served in the restaurant and is usually included (though room-only rates are available). A half-board option also includes an evening buffet meal, though reports suggest the food is average. Lunch is available a la carte, or as a set menu with guests receiving a small discount. A bar opens out onto a pleasant shaded terrace with views toward the sea. There are no pool, fitness, or spa facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available around the reception and bar area.
