The Protur Sa Coma Playa Hotel & Spa is a solid four-pearl property, located in a purpose-built hotel development on the outskirts of Sa Coma resort. It's a 10-minute walk to the resort center and its sandy beach, but there's plenty to do on-site and in the surrounding complex. There are five restaurants -- including one Michelin starred -- several pools, and lots to keep the kids busy. Half-board and all-inclusive options are available, and discounted access to a neighboring deluxe spa is also a real bonus. All 326 guest rooms and suites were updated in 2014, and high-end amenities like bathrobes and pillow menus come as standard; some rooms also feature swim-up pools, but don't expect any sea views. Overall, it's easily one of the best hotels in the area, though beach bums will probably prefer the Hipotels Mediterraneo or Playa Dorada Aparthotel, which are both beachfront properties.
Scene
Upscale family-friendly chain hotel with updated interiors and extensive grounds
Protur Sa Coma Playa Hotel has a secluded vibe, set at the end of a driveway lined with neat box hedges. The lobby is bright and modern, with a black-and-gray marble floor, clusters of low furniture, and plants cascading over the walls of its multileveled central atrium. Built in the mid-eighties, this 300-plus-room complex is comprised of several interconnected blocks with sloping balconies, most of which overlook the property's extensive and well-tended grounds. A total renovation completed in 2014 has given interiors a smart, contemporary polish throughout. This, combined with some genuinely impressive facilities, has produced an undeniably upscale package, albeit one lacking a little in personality. Warm and attentive staff, however, help create a friendly atmosphere. It's mostly populated by families with kids over the school breaks, though an adults-only zone means a guaranteed peaceful escape from any noise. Overall, the resort was quiet during our visit, although the main swimming pool can get crowded. The hotel is part of a larger complex -- the Club Protur SaComa Resort -- with a wealth of off-site facilities shared with surrounding Protur properties.
Location
Part of development walking distance of Sa Coma and Calla Millor resorts
The Protur Sa Coma Playa is part of a large hotel development located just outside the small but popular resort of Sa Coma, on Majorca's east coast. Surrounding are three of its sister properties, as well as a number of other hotels. It's about a 10-minute walk to central Sa Coma's strip of restaurants, low-key bars, and souvenir shops, while its sandy beach is then just a block from there. The slightly livelier resort of Cala Millor, which also has a longer beach, is a 15-minute walk in the other direction, or a three-minute drive. Other local attractions include a Safari Zoo (a 10-minute drive away) and the Drach Caves (about 15 minutes). The location is one of the more remote on the island, at least an hour's drive from the capital of Palma and to Palma de Mallorca Airport.
Rooms
Spacious rooms with smart, modern decor and high-end touches
All newly updated in 2014, the hotel's 326 guest rooms and suites are identically decorated with a combination of wood-effect flooring, smart contemporary furniture, and splashes of brightly colored fabrics. Starting at 300 square feet (28 square meters) even entry-level rooms are spacious, with suites expanding to 410 square feet (38 square meters). All extend to furnished balconies or terraces overlooking the pool or gardens. Swim-Up rooms open to decked patios with semiprivate pools, and some Select rooms have separate shared pools. In-room amenities include 32-inch flat-screen TVs (with a few UK-based channels), coffee- and tea-making facilities, and minibars (with free soft drinks for all-inclusive guests). Select-level rooms are also treated to free Cava on arrival. Standard high-end touches include pillow menus and bathrobes, though there's a fee to use the safes. In-room Wi-Fi is free of charge and the connection is generally excellent throughout. Bathrooms are clean and contemporary, most with walk-in rainfall showers (though some with separate tubs or shower/tub combos), plus decent hairdryers, heated towel racks, and hotel-branded toiletries.
Features
Wide range of dining options, plus three pools and adults-only zone
Even without the plethora of shared off-site facilities, the hotel offers an impressive range of leisure, relaxation, and dining options on-site. Newly updated for 2017, the main restaurant opens for buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with plenty of freshly cooked options and an alfresco terrace to enjoy them. There str four themed restaurants -- two a la carte (Indian and Italian) and two buffet (Asian and Argentine grill) -- plus the hotel's very own Michelin-starred Es Molí d'en Bou, and a poolside bar with an a la carte menu. Breakfast is included as standard, plus there's optional half-board and all-inclusive plans. Loungers are always available around the main pool, which isn't huge but large enough, and there's ramp access and a separate splash pool (though reports suggest it can get busy at peak season). Animation is usually low-key and not too noisy, and there's also a free kids' club. A second outdoor pool is just for adults, which also has a whirlpool tub, three Bali beds, and a small bar. A heated indoor pool is long enough for a swim, plus there's a sauna and bright gym (with plenty of free fruit on offer). Wi-Fi is free throughout. While no spa is on-site per-se, guests have discounted access to the full-service, deluxe BioMar spa next door -- the largest on the island. Select rooms and suites have one free entry. All guests also have free use of a huge range of facilities at the nearby Club Protur SaComa Resort, including squash, tennis, mountain biking, scuba, and shooting. There's also free access to a kids' waterpark and a farm.
