The Ona Cala Pi Club is a family-friendly budget apartment complex set in the sleepy and secluded resort of Cala Pi. It's built in the style of a Mediterranean village, with some pretty gardens, but parts of the property and apartments do show their age. The 118 apartments are spacious and clean with full kitchens and (mostly) sea views. The lovely sandy beach cove and two pools provide plenty of water to splash around, plus kids have a mini-disco to keep them entertained. Some may find the location a little too remote and the 100 steps leading to the beach a bit too tedious. Others enjoy the hotel's peaceful, rough-around-the-edges charm. Those after a hotel with a bit more to do should check out the fun and outdoorsy Sun Club Eldorado, which has horse stables and a rock wall.
Scene
Mediterranean village-style apartment complex popular with families
A wagon wheel chandelier, large terra-cotta vases, and clay-colored walls create a colonial hacienda feel upon arrival at Ona Cala Pi Club. Step into reception, however, and the look is a standard, uninspiring blend of dated furnishings, old-fashioned stone floors, and racks of tourist brochures and postcards. The complex itself is made up of an S-shaped row of three- and four-story apartment blocks that curl around a pretty patio and two-tiered pool terrace. Much of the grounds are brimming with well-tended plant life. Green shuttered windows and traditional terra-cotta tiling create a charming Mediterranean village vibe. However, parts of the property are looking worse for wear. Overall, this all-apartment hotel has a buzzy, friendly atmosphere, especially in the summer months when families from a range of European countries make up the bulk of the clientele.
Location
Quiet and relatively remote village overlooks picturesque Cala Pi cove
The hotel is located in the small and sleepy resort village of Cala Pi, on the south coast of Majorca. Beyond a few local restaurants and bars, there's very little in the immediate area. Without a doubt, the main attraction is a particularly picturesque cove with a long, narrow rocky inlet, crystal-clear water, and deep sandy beach, directly accessible from the hotel (down around 100 steps). Five minutes' walk away is the old Cala Pi tower, which is set on a rocky promontory with lovely sea-view panoramas. The nearest town of Llucmajor, which hosts regular markets and fairs, is a half-hour drive, as is the buzzing resort of El Arenal, which has a water park and long sandy bay. Around 40 minutes by car is Palma, known for its charming Old Town, Gothic Cathedral, and Palma de Mallorca Airport.
Rooms
Spacious apartments with full kitchens and balconies or terraces
There are 118 apartments in total, with either one bedroom (sleeping up to four) or two bedrooms (sleeping up to six). At around 700 square feet (65 square meters) apartments are fairly spacious, though decor certainly leans towards old-fashioned. Imagine country-style wood furniture, textured beige walls, and dated patterned fabrics. All apartments open to balconies or terraces; most have sea views and some top-floor units provide superb panoramic views. Some apartments feature outdoor grills. Separate kitchens are well-equipped with electric burners, refrigerators and freezers, microwaves, and washing machines, plus plenty of cookware. Lounges come with sofa beds and 32-inch flat-screen TVs (with a selection of English channels for kids). Wi-Fi is charged per-device and connectivity can be slow. Expect to pay extra to use the in-room safe. Like the apartments in general, bathrooms could use a refresh. These are clean and functional with shower/tub combos, toiletries, and wall-mounted hairdryers.
Features
Contemporary restaurant, two outdoor swimming pools, and plenty for the little ones
The hotel's restaurant is a bright, contemporary space that serves buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as an a la carte menu and take-out service. Breakfast is not included as standard, though breakfast and half-board plans are available. Groceries from the on-site supermarket are convenient, but expensive. There's also a poolside bar with ample seating and a lounge bar with evening entertainment. Two outdoor pools are surrounded by spacious sun terraces. These are set with loungers and parasols, plus there's a whirlpool tub large enough for small groups. One of the pool terraces tends to get shady earlier and later in the day. Kids can participate in the supervised kids' club, playground, and mini-disco. Wi-Fi is provided for a fee.
