Mar Calma Hotel

Mar Calma Hotel has a modern, glass-balconied facade, and is sandwiched between a mini-market and a travel agency. Stepping inside the lobby, guests encounter hip contemporary styling that's more akin to an urban office than a hotel. There are the closing line from "Casablanca" embossed across the front desk, an Audrey Hepburn wall painting, and a vintage telephone exchange on display that create a friendly and fun vibe. Beyond the reception lies the upbeat and trendy bar area, which opens to an alfresco street terrace. The uber-cool chill-out terrace deck has white canopies over loungers and a whirlpool, as well as grand mountain and partial sea views. The clientele is primarily younger couples on vacation. 

The hotel is located in the heart of Majorca's popular resort town of Puerto Pollensa, in the northeast area of the island at the end of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range. Set one street back from the sea and behind the marina, the hotel is a five-minute walk to the long stretch of golden sand that is Pollensa's main beach and a 10-minute walk to Pine Walk, a seafront promenade behind a smaller beach. There are numerous bars and restaurants in the blocks surrounding the hotel, and many cafes surrounding the main square, which hosts a weekly market selling fruit, vegetables, and souvenirs. Palma de Mallorca (and its beautiful Old Town) and the airport can be reached in just under an hour by car. 

Mar Calma has 20 rooms in all, which include two singles and one suite. Most rooms are small, but the contemporary design is attractive, featuring hardwood floors, crisp-white walls, and cool-gray accents. Some rooms have balconies, and corner rooms have dual-aspect windows and balconies, with views of the marina from higher floors. Amenities include flat-screen TVs (with several English-language channels), free Wi-Fi (fast and reliable), safes, and minibars. Bathrooms are modern, with walk-in rainfall showers, hairdryers, robes, and slippers. 

Rooms, especially those facing the side street and above the bar, can pick up street noise (particularly at night); quieter rooms are at the front of the hotel. The top-floor Master Suite has a private deck terrace with spectacular views of the mountains and the marina. Its bathroom has a tub and separate shower.

An excellent breakfast with hot items such as bacon and eggs cooked-to-order is included in room rates and served in the hotel's modern and stylish ground-floor bar. The bar, specializing in gins and cocktails, is also open to non-guests in the evenings. One floor up is a modern lounge and meeting space with lots of windows and plenty of bright-white seating, as well as a flat-screen TV and books for borrow. The rooftop terrace, however, is the real highlight, featuring deck chairs, a roomy whirlpool tub, and majestic mountain (and partial sea) views. Free and fast Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
