A major makeover completed in 2016 updated the Hotel Son Caliu Spa Oasis with a swish and modern finish fitting to its upscale status. Set in a quiet neighborhood but within walking distance of Palmanova resort's dining and nightlife, the location is the best of both worlds. Spa facilities among the area's top-notch, while quality dining includes buffet and a la carte options accompanied by sea views. Many of its 223 units offer sea vistas, some from private plunge pool terraces, though entry-level guest roms can feel a little cramped and lack hot drink facilities. Direct beach access, an exclusive pool lounge, and attractive gardens add up to an impressive, if a little pricey, package. A slightly cheaper alternative with sweeping sea views and summer kids' club is nearby Ponent Mar, though there's no spa.
Scene
Upscale adult-oriented hotel with stylish update and relaxed-yet-polished vibe
An attractive, palm-studded front garden, classy white-awning entrance, and subtle neoclassical touches set a tone of upscale elegance that permeates through the Hotel Son Caliu Spa Oasis. Stepping inside, the mood is unmistakably upmarket, with a fresh and spotlessly clean lobby with bonsai trees, swish contemporary seating, and floor-to-ceiling windows filling the space with natural light. Gilt-framed oil paintings and classical-style detailing contrast with a snazzy interactive information screen. While the property dates from the '60s (and one of the first hotels in the area) a head-to-toe renovation completed in 2016 has breathed new style and modern zing, while maintaining some original features such as pretty stained-glass windows. Accommodation is spread between three sections: the 'Spa' building, which also includes the spa facilities and has a breezy, Mediterranean theme; 'Portals', named after the nearby luxury port housing the exclusive zone and featuring nautically-themed decor; and a separate apartment annex along the road. To the rear are spacious and beautifully-tended gardens with manicured lawns, decked pool terrace, and flora that include ancient olive trees, banana plants, and the hotel's seven-palm cluster that inspired the property's logo. From here is direct access to a small beach, jetty, and beach club. Although families with kids are welcome, the vibe is certainly more adult-oriented. And while upmarket, the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back. Expect the occasional guest wandering around in a spa bathrobe -- we saw several on our 2017 visit.
Location
Peaceful neighborhood walking distance from Palmanova nightlife and beaches
The hotel is located in the quiet residential neighborhood of Son Caliu, just outside the large and popular tourist resort of Palmanova on Mallorca's southwest coast. While there's little in the immediate area beyond a small beach, some low-rise apartment blocks, and a couple eateries, in 10 minutes on foot, guests can reach the start of Palmanova's long beachfront promenade lined with restaurants, bars, and shops -- as well as the first of three lovely long beaches. For those looking for a wilder night out, the party resort of Magaluf is a 10-minute cab journey away. In the other direction, the buzzing capital of Palma is a 20- to 25-minute drive, with Palma de Mallorca Airport taking the same time.
Rooms
Top-level rooms open to spacious sea-view terraces with plunge pools
There are 223 units, all of which have benefitted from 2016/17 renovations. In the 'Spa' building, room decor leans toward light and breezy, with polished stone floors, simple modern furniture, and back-lit oak-wood paneling. The more upscale 'Portals' units are nautical themed, with a more classic feel that incorporates wood flooring and traditional patterned fabrics. Entry level rooms are a little on the small side, but all open up to balconies or terraces with rattan seating, many with sea views, others overlooking the quiet street or gardens. A handful of top-level Suites feature spacious sea-view terraces with loungers and private plunge pools; one even has a small putting green.Amenities mostly impress, with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, thick bathrobes, and well-stocked minibars, though tea/coffee facilities don't come as standard. Updated perks do include kettles and Nespresso machines with free capsules, as well as larger TVs and glass-sided wardrobes. In-room Wi-Fi is free of charge, though the connection could be better. Many bathrooms are open-plan and finished in Majorcan stone, with walk-in rainfall showers, Italian Prija toiletries, and quality wall-mounted hairdryers.
Features
Comprehensive spa facilities, plus pool garden with direct beach access
There's certainly no shortage of relaxation-focused facilities at the Son Caliu Spa Oasis. As the name suggests, wellness is a highlight, with free entry to an extensive (12,000-square-foot/1,100-square-meter) spa offering a large heated saltwater pool, thermal zone with salt therapy sauna, herbal steam room, sensation showers, and Roman-style laconicum (sweat room). Seven treatment rooms include a couples' room with waterbeds, there's a bright fitness room with up-to-date equipment, and regular classes such as yoga and pilates. The spa also opens to a peaceful and secluded garden with loungers and umbrellas. Plenty more sunbeds can be found around the beachfront gardens, with freeform pool, separate kids' section, poolside snack bar, and direct access to a small beach. While there's no noisy poolside animation, the hotel offers a range of water sports including kayaking, paddle boarding, and certified scuba diving (pool training and open-water). Premium-level guests have access to the Portals Lounge, a chic and exclusive area with bar, sea-view pool, and daybeds. A buffet breakfast is included in the rate, offering a wide spread of hot and cold dishes, eggs and bacon to order, and chilled Cava for morning mimosas. An optional half-board rate covers dinner with themed buffets that include Mexican, Asian, and Majorcan cooking. For lunch, there's a limited but quality a la carte menu and dining on an alfresco terrace. A second beachfront eatery specializes in seafood with sea views. A swish cocktail bar opens in the evenings, plus a spacious lounge area hosts regular live music. Room service is available 24 hours a day. There's also a tennis court, and (new for 2017) a bicycle center with workshop, bike rental, secure storage, and wash area. Though there's no dedicated parking lot, parking in the immediate area is rarely a problem. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but it can be slow.
