It's difficult not to be seduced by the charms of the 44-room Hotel Feliz. This upper-mid-range boutique offers a stylish balance of funky modern edginess and carefree sun and sea. The attention to detail throughout the property is laudable -- from the endless curios to the zigzagging staircase that leads to the rooftop sauna. Rooms are a good size and packed with personality -- some with small, sunny Astroturf terraces offering views of the bay below. For something with an equally boutique feel that's in a more historically impressive setting, the Santa Clara Urban Hotel and Spa is also worth looking into.
Scene
Small, charming, and hip urban resort
The name of this hotel translates into English as "Happy Hotel," and it certainly lives up to its moniker. Small and charming, the Feliz pegs itself as a "City Resort," though it feels more like a laid-back boutique hotel. The lobby is papered in funky art, light fixtures, and photography, which all add a hip urban edge with warm cozy undertones. The lobby is a mix of rustic shabby-chic furniture and velvet armchairs flanked by chunky candlesticks and other curios. Expect to be surrounded by plenty of young Nordic tourists -- especially Swedes -- who come here year-round for a sunny escape.
Location
Set between a lush garden and a glimmering blue bay
Back in the 1980s, the Avenue de Joan Miro, where the Hotel Feliz is located, was the center of Palma's nightlife. These days, few vestiges of its party past remain, though the area has preserved a certain bohemian air. Palma's maritime promenade is a one-minute walk from the hotel and buzzes with plenty of first-rate bars, cafes, and even a few internationally renowned nightclubs such as Pacha. A 15-minute walk in the other direction leads to the imposing Bellver Castle, which is surrounded by a huge lush park. The historic nucleus of the city center is about a 15-minute bus ride east of the hotel, and the airport can be reached by public transport in 45 minutes.
Rooms
Boutique-style decor and awesome balconies with bay views
The rooms at the Hotel Feliz have classic boutique charm. As in the common areas of the hotel, rooms feature plenty of curios, but have a far more sedated, restful atmosphere and a surprisingly fair amount of closet space. All rooms come with safes and mini-fridges as well as sleek (but small) bathrooms with pedestal sinks and shower/tub combos. The balconies are arguably the biggest draws, and are decked out with synthetic grass and funky wicker patio furniture. They look out on beautiful views of the sapphire bay below.
Features
Spectacular rooftop pool and quirky, inviting, irresistible style throughout -- but no gym
Athough the Hotel Feliz is a small property, it has two swimming pools. The larger of the two sits on the ground floor and is surrounded by a terrace and a small outdoor grill which adds a great summery, almost backyard vibe. However, the pool itself is on the edge of the property, practically on the main street. In colder months, giant heaters are set up outside to make year-round use of the space. On the roof, there is a more exclusive space: a spectacular sun terrace with a small dipping pool surrounded by synthetic grass and lounge chairs. The space features near-panoramic views that include the Bay of Palma. There's also a sauna and a charming massage room. Next up is the restaurant, with its funky wallpaper, mismatched cushions, maze of hanging lanterns, and bedazzling wine selection.
