The three-pearl Hipotels Aparthotel Mercedes is a smart, straightforward all-apartment property set overlooking the lovely long beach at Cala Millor. As well as just steps from the sea, it's also a short stroll to the livelier resort center and local supermarkets. The 97 apartments are clean and spacious with good cooking facilities and sea-view balconies, but they're dated and some past guests have complained about noise from a neighboring venue. A majority German clientele means entertainment and activities are mostly in German, and there's no dedicated kids' club. However, an outdoor pool with adjacent kiddy pool, as well as an indoor pool are pristine, and many guests have raved about the buffet breakfast. More for kids, plus an option all-inclusive plan, can be found at the Hipotels Aparthotel Cala Millor Park.
Scene
Well-presented aparthotel popular with German families
With its sleek mirrored facade, the Hipotels Aparthotel Mercedes certainly gives off a more modern-office-block vibe than resort hotel. Stepping inside, with its muted palette, uncluttered space, and comfortable-but-conservative furnishings, the feel is formal and orderly, lacking the usual garish displays of tourist pamphlets and animation programs. The property is well-presented throughout, but interiors have outdated furnishings, including the bar's striped armchairs, old-fashioned wicker in the hallways, and navy-blue faux-leather sofas in the lobby. But the pristine sundeck with an attractive pools surrounded by palm trees is where most guests spend their time anyway. Friendly and hospitable staff, however, make for a welcoming atmosphere attracting a predominantly German clientele mostly composed of families with kids.
Location
Beachfront setting within strolling distance of Cala Millor's lively center
The hotel has an enviable location set overlooking the middle of the long and picturesque sandy beach of Cala Millor. Mostly surrounded by other hotels, the immediate surrounds are relatively quiet, though the lively resort's center -- brimming with dining and nightlife -- is five to 10 minutes' walk away. That said, the famous Cafe del Sol music venue is right next to the hotel with live music that can often be heard into the night. There are also a couple supermarkets within walking distance, while by car tourists attractions such as the Castillo de sa Punta de n'Amer, a 17th-century watchtower, is about a five-minute drive and Safari Zoo is 12 minutes away. The island capital of Palma is around an hour's drive away -- the same distance as Palma de Mallorca Airport.
Rooms
Clean, spacious apartments with separate kitchens and sea-view balconies
The 96 spacious one-bedroom apartments are all essentially identical, decorated in an unfussy combination of simple wood furniture, tile floors, and dated patterned fabrics. Levels of cleanliness and maintenance are generally excellent. Sliding doors open to spacious terraces or balconies (furnished to seat up to four) with at least side sea views; some are prone to noise from nearby live music bar. Living rooms include sofa beds, 32-inch flat-screen TVs, and dining areas, and separate kitchens come with modern electric hobs, microwaves, fridges, coffeemakers, and decent cookware. Marble-top bathrooms include spacious shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and chain-brand toiletries. Wi-Fi is free of charge, though safes incur a fee.
Features
Outstanding breakfast plus indoor and outdoor pools
Facilities are decent here, though there's not a ton for kids and the hotel lacks a gym or sports facilities. A freeform pool is surrounded by plentiful loungers and umbrellas, plus there's a separate pool for kids (as well as a small playground for little ones, though no kids' club). Low-key entertainment and activities are put on, predominantly in German. There are also a small heated indoor pool and sauna. A reportedly excellent breakfast buffet is available each morning, which includes cooked-to-order eggs and pancakes on top of the usual cereals, breads, pastries, and juices. A lunch menu is also served at the poolside bar and terrace, and dinner is available, though most guests go self-catering or eat out. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
