Bottom Line

The 245-room H10 Casa del Mar is a contemporary upper-middle-range hotel located right across the promenade from a long, sandy beach. Rooms were renovated in 2016 and 2017, and although simply decorated, all are clean and feature flat-screen TVs with international channels, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. There is a seasonal entertainment program, along with a kids’ club, a solid spa, and a pleasant pool, but the highlight of this hotel is the rooftop adult-only deck, complete with an infinity pool and a bar serving cocktails. Breakfast is included in all rates, but half-board guests often find the evening meal underwhelming in terms of variety and taste. For a little bit more money, Globales Santa Ponsa Park has a bigger pool and all-inclusive rates.

Scene

Contemporary chain hotel with great location and casual vibe

While Santa Ponsa has plenty of mid- and upper-middle-range options, the H10 Casa del Mar is one of the best options in terms of value. Renovations in 2016 and 2017 gave the property a fresh, contemporary look both in most rooms and common spaces, and the hotel offers lots of great on-site amenities as well as fairly stylish interiors. The lobby has been updated with painted hydraulic-style tiles, Balearic-inspired couches and armchairs in white and blue hues, and subway tile accents. Big windows let in lots of light in the lobby, the lobby bar, and the restaurant, making spaces sunny and appealing. There isn’t much greenery in the hotel, save for a handful of palm trees on the pool deck, but the property opens directly onto Santa Ponsa’s promenade, allowing for serene beach views from many rooms. Although there is a seasonal entertainment program and there are lots of bars and restaurants within a couple of blocks of the hotel, the atmosphere here is laid-back and casual rather than happening. Still, those wanting an even mellower vibe can head to the adult-only rooftop deck, which features a small infinity pool offering panoramic sea views, a handful of cabanas, and a bar with a solid cocktail menu. Couples wanting a 100-percent child-free vacation, however, may prefer the adult-only Sentido Punta del Mar, though it is farther away from the beach. With similar rates as the H10 Casa del Mar, the Bahia del Sol Hotel is a good alternative for families -- but rooms are more basic. Travelers seeking something cheaper may want to consider the Playas del Rey Hotel, which offers free breakfast and pleasant rooms with balconies.

Location

On the promenade, across from the beach and walking distance to shops and restaurants

The H10 Casa del Mar is right on the main street of Santa Ponsa, directly opposite the stunning beach, meaning guests are just a two-minute walk from the white sand. The road has a steady flow of traffic but it is slow-moving and noise from the cars doesn’t reach the hotel. Within a five- to 10-minute walk are a range of bars, shops, and restaurants, from international fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King to traditional Spanish tapas restaurants and Italian pizzerias. Golf Santa Ponsa is a seven-minute drive from the hotel, and Marineland Mallorca, with its dolphin and sea lion shows, and extensive aquariums is a 10-minute drive. Palma de Mallorca Airport is around 25 minutes away by car. Parking is available for a fee.

Rooms

Simple rooms with bathrooms that range between modern and older

The hotel has 245 rooms spread over several interconnected buildings. There have been two rounds of renovations: a partial one in 2016 and again in 2017. All rooms are done up in the same simple, contemporary style, with clean lines, a neutral palette that draws heavily on whites, and pops of red and brown on abstract paintings above the bed. Brown floor tiles are a tad generic and bland, but white wainscoting along one of the walls adds a touch of style. Units renovated in 2016 are already starting to feel a tad tired, with scruff marks on walls and worn furniture. Rooms renovated in 2017, however, feel fresher and more modern, especially thanks to their updated bathrooms, which have attractive hydraulic tiles, large walk-in showers, wood-like floors, and square sinks over wood-and-metal vanities. Bathrooms in the rest of the rooms haven’t been renovated in a number of years and have brown tiles throughout, worn taps, and showers with older glass doors. All rooms are outfitted with a good array of amenities, including free Wi-Fi, minibars, flat-screen TVs with international channels, and air-conditioning. There is a fee for use of the in-room safe. Most rooms have a balcony, and upgrades to one with sea views are available.

Features

Restaurant, pool, seasonal entertainment program, adult-only deck, and kids’ club

Guest can choose between breakfast-only and half-board rates. Breakfast spreads get great reviews for taste, quality, and variety, but most guests find the evening meals somewhat disappointing and lacking in vegetarian options. Lunch is served at the poolside snack bar, which also offers street access. The pool isn’t huge but it has lots of loungers, a few umbrellas, and a shallow area for children. Some of the activities offered as part of the seasonal entertainment program take place here, but the atmosphere is generally relaxing. Travelers wanting something even quieter can try to grab a lounger or a cabana on the adult-only rooftop deck, complete with a small infinity pool, a bar, and great sea views. The spa is small but pleasant, and features an indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, and steam bath. Massages are available for a fee. The adjacent gym is tiny and has just the most basic equipment, but machines are modern, and there is some natural light. The kids’ club offers daily activities for children 4 to 12 years old, including arts and crafts, games, and sports. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
