Bottom Line

The Tides Beach Club in Kennebunkport was fully renovated in 2011, and the vibe evolved from cozy to South Beach-esque and trendy. Two suites designed by Jonathan Adler, spectacular ocean views, and a contemporary restaurant with a sophisticated menu are just some of the upgrades that came with the renovation. The prices are a bit more Manhattan than Maine, but if it's beachfront luxury you’re after, this is it -- The Tides sits on a semi-private three-mile stretch of Goose Rocks Beach.

Scene

A renovated historic inn with a trendy feel

Built in 1899 and owned originally by Emma Foss, what is now known as the Tides Beach Club has been operating as a hotel and inn (under different names) for over 100 years. In 2011, the Kennebunkport Resort Collection purchased the building and renovated it completely. The details of the original architecture were maintained, while modern features were added, such as flat-screen televisions, Wi-Fi, and luxury showers. Suites designed by Jonathan Adler were also created. Some guests feel that the hip and trendy renovations have turned a cozy inn into something more appropriate for South Beach, but that really depends on your preferences. Sure, this isn’t your typical New England inn with antiques everywhere and a stuffy atmosphere, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. These days, Tides Beach Club is a place for relaxing in beachside luxury. The lobby features beach-chic decor with comfortable couches and chairs, white woodwork, and hardwood floors. Adjacent to the lobby is the restaurant with a curved bar and ambient lighting (particularly pretty at night). And just across the street is Goose Rocks Beach, a wide expanse of sand and surf.
