Vincci Capitol Hotel

The Vincci Capitol shares space in the 1933 Carrion building with the Cines Capitol, one of Madrid's most famous movie palaces, and takes its history to heart. It embraces the Art Deco aesthetic throughout, from the glass elevators and plush velvet lounges in the bar to the red, white, black and silver color palette of the guest rooms. Hallways and walls are hung with vintage building blueprints, retro movie projectors, film reels, and vintage celluloid. The dimly lit public spaces are conducive to martini drinking, while the rooftop terrace with its sofas, armchairs, chaises, and panoramic city view is particularly pleasant at sunset.

The Vincci Capitol Hotel sits on a prime corner of Madrid's 24/7 Gran Via, a shopping and dining destination, in the heart of the city's cinema and theatre center. With the Callao metro stop right outside the front door, the entire city is easily accessible, but many tourist highlights are within walking distance, and a stroll down the Gran Via is an experience not to be missed. The historic Playa Mayor and Puerta del Sol are a scenic 15- to 20-minute walk. The Gran Via is the boulevard that never sleeps, so this location is always bustling.

Rooms at the Vincci Capitol embrace the Art Deco building's history, none more so than the over-the-top Fila Junior Suite with its glam, freestanding soaking tub surrounded by mirrors, curved velvet sofa, and bar with cocktail shaker. Guestrooms are done in 30's-era black, white, red, and silver, with fun, red velvet poufs for perching; some curve elegantly with the front of the building. The high-tech lighting controls may be confusing to some. Many rooms smell like smoke; request non-smoking, if desired. Guests have complained about a few maintenance issues, such as issues with the individual temperature control, unsteady beds with wheels, and showers that leak onto the floor. There are no irons or ironing boards, and there's a fee for in-room Wi-Fi.

The Vincci Capitol's extensive breakfast buffet is served in a lovely dining area with stylish lucite chairs and plush banquettes. Eggs, meats, cereals, pastry and fresh juice are offered (for a fee). There are numerous breakfast places in the surrounding blocks, for budget-conscious guests. The terrace bar features panoramic views which can be savored from comfortable sofas and armchairs. There is even an outdoor shower for guests who want to work on their Mediterranean tans. The spa includes a whirlpool, sauna and a menu of massage and beauty options, but guests are charged by treatment or by the hour.
