Bottom Line

Jardín de Recoletos is an upscale boutique located in affluent Salamanca neighborhood, near high-end shopping, great dining, and many major attractions. Its 43 studio-style rooms feature attractive contemporary decor, fully equipped kitchenettes, living areas with a sofa bed for a third guest, and great amenities such as LCD TVs, pillow menus, and free Wi-Fi. There’s an outstanding Mediterranean with a lovely garden, on-site parking, and a small business center -- but the hotel is light on features for the price. For very similar rooms at a fraction of the price, check out sister property El Madroño, located a little farther out in the Salamanca neighborhood.

Scene

An upscale property with a lovely garden and contemporary design

This upscale boutique is housed in a charming traditional building with half-moon stone balconies and a white façade. Extensive renovations completed in August 2013 brought not only fresh coats of paint to the common areas and the rooms, but also new furniture, upgraded amenities, and more contemporary style. Traditional details in the lobby -- such as the crystal chandelier and the grand marble staircase -- now blend easily with the stylish curvy metal lamp, the animal print on the rug, and the wooden wall panelling. Common spaces are uncluttered and elegant, with lots of wood accents, and tasteful classic decor. Rooms, however, are contemporary, with a brown color palette, and solid amenities.

Location

In upscale Salamanca neighborhood, within walking distance of attractions, shopping and dining

Jardín de Recoletos is located on a quiet street right off Puerta de Alcalá, one of Madrid’s most identifiable landmarks. It is right across the street from lovely Retiro Park, and a couple of blocks from Cibeles -- a stunning square surrounded by small palaces -- and striking Palacio de Comunicaciones. Serrano Street, known for its high-end boutiques and designer stores, is right around the corner, and there are many restaurants and bars within a few blocks. Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace are all within walking distance. El Prado Museum is less than a 15-minute walk away. There are many buses and a Metro line just down the street.

Rooms

Large, contemporary rooms with fully equipped kitchenettes and living areas

The hotel features 43 spacious, bright rooms with stylish contemporary decor in different brown hues ad marble floors. They’re all studios, with fully equipped kitchenettes, and living areas with a sofa bed for an extra guest. LCD TVs, air-conditioning, pillow menus, hotel-brand toiletries, and free Wi-Fi are all standard amenities. Superior Rooms have a terrace and hydromassage showers; Suites feature large furnished terraces, and iPod docks. Two of the Suites have a living area separated from the bedroom with double doors. Many of the rooms overlook the street, but others have views of the lovely, lush garden. Gil de Santivañes is a small, quiet street, and all rooms have been soundproofed, so noise should not be an issue. The hotel provides free bottled water and soft drinks on the first night. Cots are available upon request.

Features

A wonderful restaurant with a garden; on-site parking; and a small business center -- but no gym or spa

The hotel offers a number of great services, including free Wi-Fi, free bottled water and soft drinks on the first night, a solid breakfast buffet, and a small business center. However, the highlight here is probably the restaurant, serving wonderful Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant has a quiet cafe area perfect for an afternoon coffee, and a lovely garden with plants, trees and flowers. Those driving to Madrid can leave their car at the on-site parking lot for a daily fee.
