Bottom Line

The 302-room, luxurious Intercontinental Madrid was designed to mimic an 18th century palace, with enormous chandeliers, gold leaf accents, fireplaces, marble floors and inlaid wood furniture. The Intercontinental suits top executives in town on business and guests who appreciate quality and attention to detail. Visitors can enjoy fine cigars, tapas and designer cocktails in the stylish Bar 49, or a gourmet dinner or piano-accompanied Sunday brunch in the elegant El Jardin restaurant. The fitness center is top-notch, and the small spa has two treatment rooms and a sauna. The hotel is within walking distance of Calle de Serrano, home to Madrid’s most exclusive designer boutiques, but it's a long walk or 10-minute subway ride to the city center.

Scene

Execs in suit and tie make deals in the lobby, bars, and club

The Intercontinental Madrid's private lobby seating areas, spectacular atrium garden and patio, cigar bar, and elegant, sun-drenched El Jardin restaurant feel rich and luxurious, and set the scene for executive dealmaking or a lavish romantic getaway. Meeting rooms are high-end, and the Intercontinental Club Lounge (free for guests who book Club Rooms) offers free drinks, a beautifully presented breakfast and snack buffet, and a quiet place to work or talk business away from the hotel's more public areas.

Location

Ten minutes by car or metro from the city center, and a short walk from high end designer boutiques

The Intercontinental Madrid sits on the Paseo de la Castellana in the Chamberi district, close to the city's major business, banking and financial buildings and numerous embassies. The Paseo de la Castellana is one of Madrid's busiest streets, and rush hour can be noisy. There are restaurants and shops nearby, and a quarter mile away is the luxury Calle Serrano shopping district. Central Madrid's tourist attractions are reachable via 10-minute ride on the metro or a quick taxi trip.

Rooms

Big fluffy beds and marble bathrooms

Intercontinental Madrid rooms are classically decorated in royal-looking golds, beiges, and either blues or reds. They feature eighteenth century-style chairs and desks. Beds are big and comfortable with a variety of pillows. Large flat-screen TVs are satellite enabled, with in-room movies and video rentals available, but Wi-Fi costs extra. Coffee/tea facilities are in every room, along with shaving kits and beautifully packaged toiletries. Marble bathrooms are large and clean, with towel warmers and cushy terrycloth robes; upper-level rooms have separate showers and tubs.

Features

Fine dining, a cigar bar, and a superb breakfast buffet

The Intercontinental Madrid takes sophistication seriously, with plenty of dining and drinking options, including a musical Sunday brunch in the sun-drenched, gourmet El Jardin restaurant. Afternoon tea, tapas, cigars, and designer cocktails are served in the atmospheric lobby bar. The Intercontinental Club (available for guests in Club Rooms, or for other guests at an extra fee) offers conference tables, workstations, flat-screen TVs, free drinks, breakfast and beautifully plated snacks. The lobby breakfast buffet costs extra, but is mouthwateringly extravagant, including churros and local Spanish jams along with expected eggs, meats, and pastries. Business center and meeting rooms have scanners, printers, copiers, and everything else an executive might need while working out of town.
