This hotel bills itself as a four-star, but it's probably closer to three pearls. The rooms do feature modern decor and offer all the basics, plus a few extras (such quirky themes and 50-channel TVs). However, many of the rooms are on the small side and some guests found cleanliness and neatness to be lacking. The property offers a convenient location for exploring, as it is situated just south of the bustling Gran Via, within walking distance of the Plaza Mayor. For those guests who choose to relax at the hotel, the rooftop pool is a highlight, but it is only open seasonally.
Scene
Tourist-friendly and fun atmosphere
The Hotel Santo Domingo draws tourists with its central location near the sights, as well as its several standout features focused on creating an entertaining atmosphere inside the hotel. From the underground cave bar to the themed rooms, the hotel makes an effort to keep the vibe fun. And during the warmer months, a lovely (albeit small) rooftop pool is also available for guest use.
Location
Central location near several metro stations
The Hotel Santo Domingo is a good home base for exploring the tourist sights. It's just south of the bustling Gran Via, a major traffic artery, and within walking distance of The Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. There's a metro stop just outside the door of hotel and three more within a five-minute walk. The immediate area is home to a variety of restaurants and shops.
Rooms
Plenty of room choices, but some are on the small side
There are eight room categories at Hotel Santo Domingo, ranging from Smart Economy -- the smallest -- to Suites. All rooms come with a minibar, LCD TV with 50 channels, and a hairdryer. Rooms on the higher end of the range also comes with bathrobes and slippers. While the rooms have some great extras, the hotel sometimes overlooks the basics -- such as a neatly made bed. And some guests found space -- and cleanliness -- to be lacking. The 200 rooms are individually decorated, and most share plain white bedding and wooden floors. Some have fun themes and color accents, but not everyone will appreciate the quirkiness. One room, for example, had a Hawaiian theme -- which may strike some as strange in Madrid.
Features
Fun features for a three-pearl hotel
There's fun to be had at Hotel Santo Domingo. There's a restaurant -- Sando -- and two bars, one of which is in an underground "cave" with an illuminated floor. Add in the seasonal rooftop pool and there are plenty of places to party without leaving the property. The hotel also has a pretty vertical garden with 110 species of vegetation. More than 12,900 square feet of event space is available for meetings, conferences, banquets, and other occasions. In addition, hotel parking is offered at a garage with colorful murals throughout, but it comes at an extra cost.
