The 87-room Hotel Maria Elena Palace is located a couple blocks from Puerta del Sol, near many of Madrid's top attractions. Rooms are a nice size with classic decor in shades of blue and pale yellow with adequate bathrooms. While decor is on the dated side with old patterned bedspreads, bathrooms do offer hydro-massage showers and some rooms and suites have furnished terraces. The bright, sunny lobby -- covered by a crystal dome -- is a pleasant place to relax, but some guests complain about street noise from a nearby nightclub on the weekends and there's a pesky fee for Internet access. Other hotel amenities include a bar, restaurant, and bright breakfast room.
Location
On a narrow cobblestone street near Puerta del Sol
The Maria Elena Palace is located on a small street two blocks from Puerta del Sol, the heart of Madrid. Cross street Montera is known by locals for prostitution, but it’s not rampant and tourists might not notice it. There’s a Police station on that same street, so the area is perfectly safe despite some petty theft reported by tourists during the day, when crowds flow to and from Sol.The property is equidistant from three Metro lines, several buses, and short-distance trains. However, the location is ideal for exploring on foot and many major attractions are within walking distance. Great shopping around Sol and Gran Via are an easy walk away, as is young nightlife in the Huertas neighborhood. La Latina, a tapas and al fresco dining and drinking hotspot, is a quick stroll away (cross beautiful Plaza Mayor to get there), and the Austrias area, with beautiful 17th-century architecture and cobblestone streets is just a few blocks down.Sol is the heart of Madrid, both geographically speaking and in a figurative sense. “Kilometer Zero” (where all roads in Spain are said to start), shopping, dining, nightlife, and major tourist attractions are all here. This means many tourists in Madrid may never leave the neighborhood.- 25-minute drive to Madrid-Barajas Airport
