Bottom Line

El Madroño is not your typical mid-range boutique. All of its 66 rooms are stylish studios featuring kitchenettes, sofa beds in the living area, and up-to-date amenities, including flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. There isn’t much aside from several meeting rooms, an events hall with a striking glass ceiling, and a computer in the lobby. But the lovely garden with lush plants and seating areas is a rare find in Madrid, and location in upscale Salamanca neighborhood convenient for exploring the city. The property’s great rates don’t hurt either.

Scene

A small boutique featuring a mix of classic and contemporary decor

The hotel’s last extensive renovations took place in 2011, with most spaces getting not only fresh layers of paint but also new furniture and amenities. Some areas, however, have kept the original classic decor, the entrance being one of them. With cream and brown marble walls, a black terrazzo floor pattern, silver columns, and a curved wooden front desk topped with a stained glass scene, the lobby feels a little more old-fashioned than most other spaces in the hotel. Probably the most striking feature of this property is the lovely, quiet garden at the rear of the building. Stone paths wind through lush patches of grass, plants and trees, and a few seating areas offer guests the opportunity to relax outdoors in a quiet space.

Location

In an upscale residential neighborhood, near restaurants, high-end shopping and attractions

The hotel is located in the northern part of Salamanca neighborhood, an upscale residential area known for its wonderful high-end boutiques and great restaurants. Few major attractions can be found within easy walking distance, but there are three Metro lines a block away, and two more within a five-minute walk. Plenty of buses run half a block from the hotel. Those taking the Metro may want to note that Diego de León stop (served by lines 4, 5 and 6) is the nearest, but that some of the exits are much farther than others. For the shortest walk to the hotel from the Metro, guests should follow the indications to the "Hospital" exit.

Rooms

Large rooms equipped with kitchenettes and up-to-date amenities

The hotel features 66 rooms of two different categories: Classic and Style. They’re all large studio-style units complete with modern, fully equipped kitchenettes; clean bathrooms with walk-in showers, and up-to-date amenities such as flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Each room has a spacious seating area with a sofa bed, and can sleep either three adults or two adults and two kids. Classic Rooms have, as the name suggests, classic decor with wooden furniture in two shades of brown, gold-rimmed painting frames, and smoke-colored accent walls. Style Rooms were renovated in late 2011, and feature contemporary decor in whites and grays, cream marble floors, and large colorful photos above the bed. Minibars in all rooms are stocked with free water and sodas on the first night. Pillow menus and cots are available.

Features

Breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, and on-site parking -- but no fitness center

The hotel features a number of solid amenities for those planning an event or in town for business. It offers five fully equipped meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, a striking events space with a glass ceiling, on-site parking for a daily fee, and a restaurant open for private events only. The lovely garden -- featuring winding cobblestone paths lined with trees and plants, and a couple of sitting areas -- offers a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. A solid breakfast buffet is served every morning.
