Catalonia Gran Via

Housed in two turn-of-the-century buildings on historic Gran Via, this property, part of the Catalonia hotel chain, is sleek and trendy. The hotel underwent extensive renovations in 2017, bringing sophisticated interiors throughout. Guests access the hotel through the lobby lounge, a sleek, light space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Gran Via, mustard suede couches, black floors, leather-like touches, and brushed-gold accents. A small reception area with black-and-white marble floors has just enough space for two small front desks and a velvet two-seater in deep green hues. The combination of brushed gold, velvet, and marble gives the space a modern Art Deco feel. Architectural and ornamental elements from the original buildings can be seen throughout, including a marble staircase with wrought-iron railings, the old gates of the original wooden elevator, and a beautiful carriage access with painted tiles and a stained-glass door. The hotel offers great perks for a small city-center property, including a rooftop pool, spa, and an excellent restaurant popular among locals. The vibe is casual and lively, especially in the evenings, and the hotel has a weekly agenda with after-work events, live music, and tastings that draw many guests. We attended a wine tasting event that included tapas, a jazz band, and an art exhibition, and it was packed and well-organized. Rates are right for the area and on-site amenities, but travelers not expecting to make use of a spa or a gym and wanting to save some bucks should consider Vincci The Mint, which is located across the street. Another solid option for those who do want perks like a fitness center and a rooftop bar is the nearby Iberostar Las Letras Gran Via. For something in a slightly quieter part of town but still within walking distance of major attractions, the Melia Madrid Princesa is a suitable pick. 

With a central location on Gran Via, the hotel is an ideal home base for exploring Madrid. The street is one of the city's most important shopping and nightlife spots, chock-full of hotels, restaurants, and shops, and hence a place visitors want to be whether traveling for leisure or business. An array of sights surround the property, with attractions like Plaza Cibeles, Puerta del Sol, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum all less than a 10-minute walk away. The Prado Museum, Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace are all about a 15-minute walk southeast, while there are two metro stops within two blocks of the hotel. Madrid Airport is a 25-minute drive.

The hotel’s 185 rooms were renovated in 2017, and have a fresh, contemporary feel. Exposed brick walls and wooden floors give rooms a slight industrial look, while large black headboards, tartan-printed benches, and sheer brown curtains with matching throw pillows and bed runners add style. Big windows let in lots of light, and although rooms overlooking Gran Via may get some street noise when the windows are open, all have double glazing that largely keeps noise at bay. Rooms range from compact single units with a twin bed to large suites with terraces and outdoor hot tubs. Family rooms with one king bed and bunk beds are available.Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs with international channels, well-stocked minibars, individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, and safes with built-in international power sockets. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and each room provides a smartphone with data that guests can borrow during their stay free of charge. Premium and higher-category rooms have added perks, such as robes and slippers, espresso machines, electric kettles, and turndown service, while Superior Rooms and up offer free passes to the spa. Modern bathrooms have large walk-in showers, quality toiletries, and heated towel racks. Some suites have body dryers, which are wall-mounted devices that blow warm air and eliminate the need to use a towel.  

One of the hotel’s top features is its rooftop pool. It is better suited for a quick dip than for laps, but it has a few loungers where guests can relax in the sun, as well as views of Gran Via and the city, and it's open year-round. The spa is also small but pleasant, with a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, two sensations showers, and three massage cabins. Access to the spa is an extra charge for guests staying in Standard and Premium Rooms, and reservations are required due to its size. Those wanting to get a quick workout can head to the fitness room, equipped with just four machines. Buffet breakfasts are served every morning in BLoved, the popular on-site restaurant. The spread includes continental options as well as hot items such as eggs and bacon. The restaurant is a popular lunch and dinner spot for locals thanks to its tasty international menu with a Mediterranean focus and great wine list. The lobby bar has a short tapas and snacks menu available all day, as well as cocktails and breakfast combos for those on-the-go. Catalonia Gran Via also features four flexible meeting rooms and a slew of services and amenities for corporate events, including audiovisual equipment and catering. The hotel does not have on-site parking but discounted rates are available at a nearby lot.
