Situated in a historic building with wrought-iron balconies, the vibe here is immediately welcoming and bright. The common area does triple duty as lobby, breakfast room, and seating area, but the owners go out of their way to make the guests feel right at home. Every inch of the space has an eclectic, arts-and-crafts quality, from the reclaimed door which functions as the dining table to the bright, antiqued walls. The bed-and-breakfast is best suited for solo travelers and couples, though families can be accommodated too.

Artistic B&B is on an extremely quiet side street in the middle of Madrid’s Barrio de las Letras, and the most famous museums in the city are all within a 10-minute walk. The neighborhood is filled with a wide array of restaurants (El Rayen, just downstairs, gets rave reviews) and the shopping in the area is great. The metro is two blocks away and Atocha Station, Madrid’s largest train station with connections throughout Spain, is a 15-minute walk, or one stop on the metro. Barajas International Airport is less than 40 minutes away by metro and rail links, or can be reached by taxi in under 30 minutes.

The bright, antiqued rooms each have an individual artistic theme, from famous paintings to tapestries from North Africa, some of which have stories behind them. Though most rooms are small, all have 32-inch flat-screen TVs and comfortable beds, and Batik and Birds Rooms have much more space to accommodate families or groups. Street-facing rooms have small balconies with a charming view down the quaint block. All rooms have compact en-suite bathrooms with mosaic vanities and stand-up showers, while some rooms have sinks that have been hand-sculpted by the owners. However, guests will need to bring their own toiletries. Some rooms have AC, while all come with ceiling fans, and though street noise shouldn't be an issue some guests have reported hearing noise from neighboring rooms.
