The Harbourview Hotel Macau is a four-pearl property that opened in 2015 with lavish palatial styling inspired by 19th-century Prague and Art Nouveau. Its Fisherman's Wharf location is great for families with kids, and those looking for excitement can find the Sand Casino just opposite, though it's a 10-minute drive from Macau's main shopping and dining districts. Of its 389 guest rooms and 55 suites, many feature lovely harbor views and marble bathrooms come with L'Occitane toiletries and some freestanding tubs. Although facilities are relatively limited, there's an impressive heated indoor pool plus a choice of buffet or a la carte dining for an additional fee. For those who'd rather have a waterfront location without the swimming pool, sea-view balconies at The Rocks Hotel come in around the same price.
Scene
Palatial and polished property channels the spirit of 19th-century Prague
Opened in 2015 as part of the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf redevelopment, the construction cost in the region of $180 million, and you can certainly see where the money went. While not a luxury-level hotel, it feels opulent and upscale, with an attention to detail and thematic continuity that is undeniably impressive, if a little gimmicky for some. Developers of the Harbourview Hotel Macau certainly pulled out all the stops in infusing the property with the spirit of 19th-century Central Europe. Numerous neo-renaissance murals copied directly from historic buildings in Old Town Prague adorn its elaborate facade, while neo-classical architectural touches lend the large hotel the look of a Bohemian-era palace. Inside is no less palatial, combining antique-style furnishings, gilded Grecian columns, and intricately patterned fixtures to create a polished classical atmosphere. Interiors also add Art Nouveau touches such as stain-glass ceilings, wood paneling, and polished marble flooring. The hotel is mostly popular with regional customers -- from China, Singapore, and Hong Kong -- while also attracting a share of European clientele, both couple and some families.
Location
Set in the Fisherman’s Wharf district, five minutes from the ferry terminal
This hotel is located just a few minutes walk south of Fisherman’s Wharf, an amusement park and shopping center on the east side of Macau. While the landmark Sands Casino is just across the road, much of the surrounds are still under construction and it's away from the main central shopping, dining, and nightlife hub centered around Senado Square (five to 10 minutes by car). The Ruins of St. Paul’s -- a 17th century landmark -- is within a 10-minute drive. The Vegas-style Cotai Strip, full of casinos and glitzy hotels, can be reached within a 15-minute drive, around the same time to Macau International Airport and the Taipa ferry terminal. Macau's Outer Harbour ferry terminal with regular connections to Hong Kong Island just a five-minute drive.
Rooms
Marble bathrooms with luxury toiletries and claw-foot soaking tubs
The 389 guest rooms and 55 suites certainly don't break from the hotel's palatial European character, with intricate wood-carved fixtures, classical antique-style furniture, and molded cornices. Rooms start at a relatively modest 225 square feet (21 square meters) though the larger suites can be four and five times that. Views are either over surrounding buildings or superb views over the nearby wharf and harbor. Standard amenities mostly impress, with 48-inch flat-screen TVs (with around 45 channels), iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, and coffee- and tea-making facilities, though minibars are often left empty. Marble bathrooms are definitely upscale with walk-in showers, L'Occitane toiletries, and particularly comfy robes; many also feature freestanding claw-foot bathtubs with large windows that overlook the sleeping area. Some rooms add free smartphones that can be used to make local phone calls, access the internet, and act as a travel guide.
Features
Large heated indoor pool with poolside whirlpool tubs
The hotel's main eatery is the mezzanine-level Praha Restaurant, where buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served amid elegant Central European styling. Buffet dining is decent and beautifully-presented, though breakfast is not included in the standard rate and reports suggest service can unorganized. A more traditional regional menu is served a la carte at the Jade Orchin restaurant, which opens for lunch and dinner daily. The extravagantly decorated Praha Bar serves drinks all day until late. While there's no outdoor pool, indoor facilities are excellent with a long heated swimming pool plus poolside whirlpool tubs. Featuring murals of Old Town Prague, the fitness room has a fairly good range of modern equipment, though it isn't open 24 hours. A business center provides meeting rooms, internet terminals, and printing services. Parking is available on-site for a daily charge.
