SIXTY LES

This gorgeous 141-room boutique joined other high-end hotels and restaurants to help revitalized the once-gritty Lower East Side neighborhood, which is known for its raucous late-night activity. For well-heeled hipsters looking for downtown action, the cool design, attentive staff, fitness center, and pool combine to make this a very fine place to crash after a night out.

PUBLIC

Opened in 2017, the four-pearl Public is a trendy hotel with a focus on design, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan near numerous bars, restaurants, and clubs. Designed by Ian Schrager of Studio 54 fame, everything is minimalist, chic, and Instagram-worthy here, drawing a crowd of mostly 20- and 30-somethings. The 367 rooms can be small, but they're smart and make good use of the space, outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows, Bose speakers, free Wi-Fi, and steamers. Although lacking a spa and pool, a 24-hour gym is on-site and dining options are extensive. Highlights include a rooftop bar with stunning panoramic views, a living room-style Lobby Bar, and restaurant by well-known chef Jean-Georges. Minor issues such as troublesome elevators and a lack of room service are downsides. This is a great, hip pick, but nearby SIXTY LES has a pool and sauna.

NobleDEN Hotel

The three-pearl NobleDEN Hotel has few frills, but it’s clean, trendy, and surprisingly affordable (by NYC standards) for its convenient Little Italy location. The tourist-friendly Chinatown and SoHo areas are within walking distance, and several subway stations nearby provide easy access to other neighborhoods. The 54 rooms aren’t exceptionally spacious, but have mini-fridges, beds with storage drawers, and eco-friendly recycling and reusable towel systems. Several rooms have lovely city views, and the rooftop seating area has even better 360-degree panoramas. Like most Manhattan boutique hotels, this one lacks extra amenities, but provides free beverages in the lobby, day passes for the nearby 24 Hour Fitness (for a fee), and free Wi-Fi throughout. Further uptown, The Gallivant Times Square has a breakfast buffet and small gym for comparable rates, but a less chic location.

Wyndham Garden Chinatown

The Wyndham Garden Chinatown is a modern mid-range chain hotel in the heart of bustling Chinatown. Though the hotel is a trek from traditional sights in midtown, it's within easy walking distance of trendy bars and restaurants in Chinatown and on the Lower East Side. Its 106 guest rooms are small but contemporary, and some come with outdoor terraces that look out onto the city.

Comfort Inn Manhattan Bridge
61-63 Chrystie Street Manhattan New York

This Comfort Inn is simple value option with modern decor and few features. Basic but clean rooms are a good price for the location and within walking distance of many downtown locations. The excellent Chinese restaurants and knock-off stores of Chinatown are literally at your doorstop; Little Italy is also around the corner for dining options galore. Guests can walk to the Grand Street subway or bike to Brooklyn using the CitiBike station across the street, via the Manhattan Bridge. Just avoid parking the car if possible -- daily rates are astronomical. It's also worth considering the nearby Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel, which the local owners also run.

Sago Hotel

The upper-middle-range Sago Hotel, located in the heart of the trendy Lower East Side, offers a fresh, industrial-chic vibe. Its 20 rooms reflect a boutique aesthetic with wood floors, concrete accent walls, and windows overlooking city views, plus fairly roomy bathrooms with walk-in showers. Amenities and space are limited in entry-level rooms, though Studios, Suites, and the two-story Penthouse add room and high-end extras, like marble tubs, chic kitchens or kitchenettes, and furnished terraces. The hotel's trendy on-site bar and restaurant was closed during our 2017 review, though there were plans for a replacement, and a free continental breakfast was still being served in the space. The hotel also offers free passes to a neighborhood gym. By comparison, the nearby Sohotel is a more eclectic boutique property with a connecting gastropub, though decor isn't as polished.

Hotel Indigo Lower East Side New York

The three-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Indigo Lower East Side is an eclectic and energetic property that offers travelers an affordable stay in this always-hip downtown hood. Its 294 guest rooms are chic and streamline, and they boast murals by graffiti artist Lee Quiñones. They're all well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, Frette linens, and Keurig coffeemakers, and bathrooms have roomy walk-in showers and CO Bigelow products. Hotel Indigo's trendy rooftop bar, Mr. Purple, is the top feature here, with an expansive outdoor terrace and a heated pool. Other highlights include a 24-hour fitness center, a lobby cafe, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Travelers looking for a swanky boutique stay nearby can consider The Nolitan Hotel.

Hotel on Rivington

The Hotel on Rivington is a secretive hot spot for well-heeled travelers who like their neighborhoods cool and their thread counts high. Sleek and stylish, the monied vibe doesn't exactly mesh with the Lower East Side's immigrant history, but the luxurious rooms and amazing views just might merit the attitude.

The Gatsby Hotel

With modern decor, clean private rooms, and friendly staff, The Gatsby Hotel is a fresh budget property for guests who want to avoid hostels. Situated on bustling East Houston Street, this vibrant Lower East Side location is accessible to trendy neighborhood hotspots and is right across the street from a subway station. The hotel’s 45 rooms, which sleep two to four, are tiny, even for Manhattan. However, thanks to renovations in mid-2016, they’re also clean and contemporary with wood floors, modern bathrooms, and comfy beds, as well as amenities like flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, toiletries, and free Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms add mini-fridges and microwaves. There’s a small reception area, but otherwise no extra property features. Travelers looking for just a dash more common space might consider the nearby Hotel East Houston, which has a lobby lounge and seating on an outdoor deck.

Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel
143 Bowery Manhattan New York 4987

Though it's not exactly high style, the Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel does offer a good value in an excellent downtown location. The hotel is a block away from the subway and a short walk to Chinatown and Little Italy attractions, with SoHo and Nolita an eight-minute stroll away. Its 102 rooms are clean and simple with handsome bathrooms -- though some rooms pick up hallway or street noise. All rooms include HCTVs, safes, and work desks, and higher categories include mini-fridges and microwaves. There's no full restaurant on-site, but guests can enjoy a daily breakfast for free. And on-site fitness and business centers enhance the property's appeal, as does the rooftop deck. Another nearby option could be the Wyndham Garden Chinatown, which includes a restaurant and bar.
