Krystal Grand Los Cabos is a three-and-a-half-pearl, all-inclusive resort conveniently located beachfront to Costa Azul. Though the ocean is too rough for swimming, the sand is set with sun loungers and picnic tables. When construction is completed in late 2017, there will be 454 rooms, a fitness center, and spa. Renovated rooms are contemporary with purposeful minimalism throughout: open spaces, clean lines, and neutral colors. All-inclusive rates include dining at all on-premise restaurants, two bars, and minibars in the rooms. The hotel has a massive pool terrace and kids’ club, but little of interest within walking distance. For those looking to be closer to downtown Cabo (and closer to a swimmable beach), check out Casa Dorada Los Cabos Resort and Spa, but at a slightly higher price tag.
Scene
Family-friendly, contemporary hotel undergoing renovation and expanding amenities
Formerly the Bel Air Resort in Cabo, the Krystal Grand Los Cabos underwent construction to expand and renovate the grounds, rooms, and some features in March of 2017. Parts of the hotel have been completed and are open for guests to use: a large pool overlooking the Sea of Cortez, several restaurants, and a spacious open-air lobby. Other areas were still under construction when the Oyster team visited in spring of 2017. While a fitness center and spa are advertised, neither were open for guests to use, and several room categories haven’t been completed. Some guests have complained of construction noise that can be heard from rooms as well. The areas of the hotel which have been completed are modern, spacious, and feature lots of open spaces creating a relaxed and laid-back vibe throughout. Families with young kids and younger couples from the U.S. and Mexico tend to make up the majority of the guests here. The main pool is usually bustling and busy throughout the day with music playing, families hanging out, and waiters serving drinks poolside. Some guests have mentioned the main pool can get loud and rowdy with kids playing, and there isn't a separate adult-only pool.
Location
Located on The Corridor, an eight-minute drive to San Jose del Cabo
Located directly on the popular tourist road, The Corridor, which runs between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Krystal Grand is within easy driving distance of both cities. The notorious nightlife of Cabo San Lucas -- The Office on the Beach, the Mango Deck, and the Marina -- are a 25- to 28-minute drive from the hotel. Once in downtown Cabo San Lucas, other popular restaurants, souvenir shops, and bars are within easy walking distance of one another. The small town of San Jose del Cabo and its traditional Old World charm are an eight-minute drive from the hotel. Travelers can expect cobblestone streets, a vibrant art scene, and even horses wandering into the city from time to time. The larger, more popular airport, Los Cabos International Airport is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. The smaller airport, Cabo San Lucas International Airport is a 35-minute drive from the hotel. For guests looking to do more exploring throughout Los Cabos, renting a car is a more economical option than taking taxis.
Rooms
Spacious and contemporary rooms; all with balconies, fully-stocked minibars, and Nespresso machines
Rooms at the Krystal Grand Los Cabos are primarily divided by views, proximity to the beach, and swim-out pools. When construction is complete, there will be 454 rooms that are categorized by Sea View Junior Suite, Suite Swim Out Altitude, and Altitude Ocean Front Suite, with some of the rooms featuring private whirlpools on the balconies. While there are completed rooms in each category, some guests have noted it can be tough to reserve specific room types while renovations are still ongoing at the hotel until October 2017. Construction noise can be heard in some of the rooms. Completed rooms have been updated with a contemporary decor that is purposefully minimal: neutral colors, glass-top tables, and lots of open space. Colors throughout the rooms are predominantly beige, brown, and white, though there are splashes of vibrant colors in the blue curtains, magenta trims, and abstract artwork. Rooms are spacious and include separate sitting areas with a dining room table and a sofa. All the rooms have balconies, but the Ocean Front and Sea View Room categories provide stunning sunset views. Other standard amenities include a free minibar with local beers and sodas, Nespresso machine, robe and slippers, two bottles of water, flat-screen TV, high-power air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are spacious and well-appointed with hairdryers, towels, and L’Occitane toiletries. They feature standing glass showers, rainfall showerheads, and magnifying mirrors. The loofahs and toothbrushes in all the bathrooms are a particularly nice extra.
Features
All-inclusive hotel with two spacious pools, kiddy pool, kids' club, and six dining and drinking options
Krystal Grand offers a nice round-up of features to keep families busy. The spacious hotel is centered around a courtyard which features a large pool terrace with two pools overlooking the Sea of Cortez. The two pools are side-by-side with a walkway in between. Both pools are lined with in-water lounge chairs and umbrellas, as well as out-of-water umbrellas and cushioned wooden lounge chairs. Poolside service for drinks and food come from the Surfer Bar, the small pool bar serving snacks and drinks throughout the day. A small beach setup is situated in front of the hotel and has cushioned wooden lounge chairs and a few picnic tables. While the beach is lovely, there is no lifeguard on duty and the undercurrent tends to be a bit rough, so guests swim at their own risk.A kiddy pool is located within the main courtyard of the hotel, and is exceptionally nice. It features a pirate ship water playground with slides and sprinklers. There is a kids’ club, for both teens and younger kids with supervised activities, adjacent to the kiddy pool. The teen room features beanbag chairs, a foosball table, and computers. Scattered throughout the hotel are a few chic common areas with modern couches and over-water patios with wooden chairs and tables. Travelers can choose to upgrade their stay to the Altitude Club, which is a preferred members option to include a private lounge with cocktails, expedited reception services, and dedicated concierge. There are a few meeting rooms in various sizes to rent, including a convention center which can hold 1,000 people. Valet parking is included in the all-inclusive package. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.Note, the fitness center and spa were undergoing construction and were not completed when the Oyster team visited in May 2017, with completion set for October 2017.
All-Inclusive / Food
All-inclusive rates include four restaurants and two bars
O Restaurant is Krystal Grand’s main restaurant serving an international buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Like most restaurants in Mexico, O features traditional Mexican dishes in the buffet like guacamole, taquitos, and tortilla soup. Surfer Bar and Cafeteria are open throughout the day, offering light snacks and drinks. Surfer Bar is situated adjacent to the pool and serves nachos, fries, and wings. Cafeteria is located next to the lobby and serves prepared sandwiches, pastries, and coffee in an air-conditioned setting. Ayami is the hotel’s elegant, dinner restaurant serving sushi and sashimi. Guests should note that reservations are needed for Ayami and there's a dress code. The lobby bar is open for drinks throughout the day and night and has spectacular views of the ocean. Room service is available throughout the day and night as well. All restaurants and bars are part of the all-inclusive plan, except for room service. Travelers should note that more restaurants are expected to be added when renovations are completed in October 2017.
