The 80-room Metro Plaza Hotel is a budget property in downtown Los Angeles, near Olvera Street and Chinatown, and a six-minute walk to Union
Station. The spacious rooms range from Studios to Kitchenette Suites; all come with free Wi-Fi, newspapers, and mini-fridges (but no coffeemakers), but the decor is mismatched and severely dated -- some rooms still have tube-style TVs. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate, and the fitness center includes a handful of cardio- and weight-training equipment. Coffee is available 24 hours a day in the lobby, and there's a public computer with Internet access, which guests can use for an hourly fee.
Scene
A centrally located older hotel near Union Station
The Metro Plaza Hotel is not chic, trendy, or modern, but it exudes a mellow, laid-back vibe at budget-friendly rates, drawing guests from all over the world. The dark, heavy, unstylish lobby decor, with old-fashioned leaf-patterned wallpaper, is somewhat brightened by the natural light that streams in through the large glass entrance, and the two large potted plants that flank it provide some welcome greenery. Chinese lanterns hang over the front desk, perhaps a nod to the hotel's proximity to Chinatown, while black leather sink-in couches provide seating. The small breakfast room, with cherrywood paneling (which shows some wear), a gray-and-white tile floor, recessed lighting, a buffet area, and artwork on the walls, is off the lobby. Given the Metro Plaza's proximity to the Fashion District, Jewelry District, Toy District, and Financial District, business travelers make up about half its clientele. The large rooms with work areas are conducive to extended stays.
Location
Downtown Los Angeles between Union Station and Chinatown; many restaurants and attractions are within walking distance
The Metro Plaza Hotel sits in the midst of a busy neighborhood, near Chinatown and Union Station, with plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. The
Chinese American Museum, Public Art Triforium, Los Angeles City Hall, and
Olvera Street are less than a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dodger Stadium, and Financial District are
within a six-minute drive while the Fashion and Jewelry Districts are 10 minutes away.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theater are a 14-minute drive, and
Los Angeles International Airport is 23-minutes away from the hotel.
Rooms
Clean and large with mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and free daily newspapers; Kitchenette Suites available
Rooms range from standard Studio Rooms to Kitchenette Suites. Metro Suites have separate bedrooms, and two-story De Luxe Suites can connect to Metro Suites for more space. Gaudy quilted bedspreads, green or red carpeting, and yellow antique-patterned drapes that in no way match the bedding makes up most of the decor. All rooms, including Studios, have extra table seating, and come with free newspapers, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, and either tube-style or flat-screen TVs. Some of the wallpaper is peeling, and the furniture shows some wear and
tear. Rooms do not have coffeemakers -- not even the Kitchenette Suites, which have microwaves, cabinets, and sinks. Some rooms get loud traffic noise. Brightly lit brown (or gray) tile bathrooms have shower/tub combos -- with spa showerheads -- hairdryers, and Rain Breeze toiletries.
Features
Free continental breakfast and Wi-Fi, a fitness center and conference room
The free continental breakfast includes muffins, bagels, cereal, coffee, tea, and juice, and guests give it OK reviews. A small fitness center includes cardio- and weight-training machines, which has a leather couch
and green carpeting. The hotel has a conference room, which can accommodate up to 45 people, and copying and faxing
services are available at the front desk. Staff will provide tour and travel information, and book transportation. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the
hotel, but guests have complained about the slow connection. A computer with Internet is available in the lobby for guests' use, for a small hourly fee.
