Bottom Line

The 63-room Farmer's Daughter Hotel has a big personality, putting an urban spin on country decor in a location convenient to the Farmer's Market and CBS Studios. Rooms are spacious and decorated with a mix of country accents -- gingham, denim, wood -- and the on-site restaurant Tart continues the theme with vintage teacups, barn and farm memorabilia, and cooking utensils. There is a small pool with rubber duckies floating in it and an outdoor patio fringed with lights. The property sits directly on busy Fairfax Avenue near many tourist spots, restaurants, and shopping.

Scene

Quirky and upbeat boutique

Most traces of the Farmer's Daughter Hotel's former life as a Ramada Inn have been erased with an eclectic renovation. The lobby doubles as a store with handcrafted items and a former 1970s cigarette machine retrofitted as an art vending machine. Tokens bought at the front desk are used to purchase small pieces of original art -- earrings, jokes, painted wood pieces -- from the machine. Reclaimed barn-siding lines the back wall and a birdcage with parakeets sits next to low-slung knotty pine sofas with leather cushions. This is a popular place for hopeful "Price is Right" contestants to stay, and a wall of Polaroid photographs documents their journeys. The playful atmosphere continues with a ping-pong table, foosball, bikes, and a small pool. Guests are a mix of tourists, families, and business people. The proximity to CBS also draws audience members of American Idol and The Craig Ferguson Show.

Location

Across the street from the Grove, CBS, and the Farmer's Market

The Grove, a huge outdoor complex of shops, restaurants, and a premium theater with 13 screens, is right across the street (Entertainment Tonight with Mario Lopez is also broadcasted from there). The iconic Farmer's Market and CBS Studios are also across the street. Trader Joe's is next door; Whole Foods and CVS are a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel is close to the famed Melrose shopping district, Canter's Deli, The Beverly Center, and Samy's Camera.

Rooms

Farm chic rooms with techy touches

The modern farm décor varies from room-to-room; Standard and Deluxe Kings share details such as rustic wood floors, denim duvets, gingham curtains, plaid wallpaper, and bright yellow trellis headboards. Bathrooms in Standard/Deluxe rooms have been freshened with paint and fixtures but some have tile left from the hotel's former life as a Ramada. Each rooms has a flat-screen TV, iPod dock, coffeemaker, and minibar. Higher-priced Robin Rooms have bluetooth vanity mirrors, enabling a connection to music and movies on personal devices. Robin Rooms are also upgraded with designer bedding, grasscloth wall-coverings, and banquette style seating in an organic palette of creams and browns. Bathrooms in them are larger and more modern, and some have sinks separated from the toilet/shower area. Those guests spending a longer time may want to book the Farmer's Suite. The suite has a separate bedroom and living room, each with a flat-screen TV, and a kitchenette with small table flanked by two bright red windsor chairs.

Features

Free snacks, a tiny pool, and a tasty restaurant add to the communal vibe.

If hunger strikes, there are a lot of free snacks on-site. A basket of locally-made caramels is stationed in the business center. At the front desk, potato chips are put out until noon along with sweet tea, followed by chocolate-chip cookies at noon. In the early evening, there's a free whisky tasting. There is an outdoor pool with whimsical floating rubber duckies, but it's tiny. The hotel lends both books and bikes. There's no fitness center.
