Bottom Line
The sleek and modern Custom Hotel is a mid-sized boutique near Los Angeles International Airport. It attracts business travelers who want to avoid nearby chain hotels while taking advantage of five custom lounges, contemporary rooms with a jet set vibe, and a heated swimming pool with lounge space and fire pit. The on-site Deck 33 Bar and Restaurant serves Pacific Rim style food and cocktails. There is a free shuttle to LAX and free Wi-Fi, but parking in the neighborhood is sparse and there is a daily valet parking fee.

Scene
A mod boutique near the airport
The Custom Hotel wants to put fun and glamour back into business travel. Throughout the lobby and rooms there are stylish nods to the hey day of jet set travel, such as an orange modular sofa with black and white ottomans accented by globe pendant lights overhead. Five custom lounges are uniquely decorated, including the LAX lounge with sky blue walls and a painted pixel map of the world that's designed to replicate a VIP airport lounge. Outdoors, the heated swimming pool and Deck33 Bar and Restaurant are a hip place to lounge and sip specialty cocktails, but the facilities close on the earlier side.
Location
In Westchester, Los Angeles, about three miles from LAX
The neighborhood around the Custom Hotel isn't exactly walkable -- this is Los Angeles after all -- but a grocery store and Coffee Bean are right next door. Street parking is scarce and the only option for parking at the hotel is a paid valet service. Venice Beach is about 10 miles away and LAX is so close that traffic jams are rarely an issue. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the airport.
Rooms
Mod and creative with LED custom lighting, 37-inch flat-screen TVs, and views of Los Angeles
Rooms at the Custom Hotel are more creative than nearby, cheaper chain hotels. Touches include custom LED lighting, stark white bathrooms with full tubs, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. The mod decor of wood platform beds and metallic colored modular sofas and ottomans are a memorable touch. Elevated one- and two-bedroom suites are a nice choice for families. Though the airport is nearby, there are no complaints of noise.
Features
Outdoor swimming pool, gaming systems, and free Wi-Fi
The Custom Hotel has an outdoor swimming pool with plenty of areas to relax including cabanas, traditional lounge chairs, and seating arranged around a fire pit. The Deck 33 Bar and Restaurant serves cocktails and dinner near the pool. The Transonic lounge has both Wii and Xbox gaming systems plus a 55-inch flat-screen TV with surround sound. Guests in Elevated rooms have access to the serene Tranquility lounge and its leather massage chairs. There is a fitness center with both cardio equipment and free weights. Wi-Fi is free (though some report that it can be slow) and a shuttle to the airport is also free.
