Bottom Line

The 69-room, upper-middle-range BLVD
Hotel & Spa is on bustling Ventura Boulevard adjacent to the 101 highway, with
restaurants and buses within walking distance. Rooms are fresh and stylish with a
modern color palette, and have rainfall showerheads, mini-fridges, and iPads on request. A full-service spa is
on-site, along with a cafe/bar for snacks, cocktails, and coffee. The property has some downfalls, namely street noise in some rooms, and the fact that the pool and gym are both very small. Parking is available on-site for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free, though iffy -- a significant hindrance for business travelers, who may prefer the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles for its expansive fitness center and meeting space.

Scene

A luminous, modern hotel with a young vibe

Although the brown cement exterior looks rather plain, the
BLVD Hotel & Spa's interior is bright and modern. In the lobby, floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings make for an airy feel, while bright teal walls and a framed poster spelling out Los Angeles hotspots lend some edge. There's a relaxed vibe throughout, thanks to an open
plan that flows from the lobby into the BLVD Bar and Cafe. Neutral-toned couches, mood lighting, wood floors,
and tufted leather barstools decorate the bar area, while the cafe has white
leather seating and a patterned gray area rug. The on-site spa, BLVD Spa, looks
hip and luxe with metallic wallpaper, a chandelier over the front desk, and
contemporary floor tiles. An outdoor sun-deck is also available, and has wicker furniture with orange cushions and umbrellas. This hotel caters to a wide
range of guests, but a younger clientele predominates.

Location

Adjacent to the 101 with Universal Studios five minutes away

The hotel sits across from the 101 freeway on busy
Ventura Boulevard, and is within walking distance of bus stops and restaurants -- there's a metro stop less than 10 minutes' walk away, but it's across the highway. Universal Studios Hollywood and the Hollywood Bowl
are about five minutes' drive from the hotel, while the Hollywood Walk of Fame and TCL
Chinese Theatre about about 10 minutes by car. The Los Angeles International Airport is
around 30 to 40 minutes' drive away.

Rooms

Stylish with bright accent colors, mini-fridges, microwaves, and iPod docking stations

Size is the main difference between standard rooms and suites at the BLVD Hotel & Spa, as all accommodations are bright, contemporary, and clean. Blue accent walls and plush green headboards offset orange pillows on the beds, while a mix of wood floors and patterned area rugs further the rooms' eclectic flair. Each room has a mini-fridge with glass doors, microwave, coffeemaker, flat-screen TV, iPod docking station, and wooden work desk with modern white chair. All receive free bottled water, and can borrow iPads and CD/DVD players on request. Some suites have furnished patios
or balconies, while Presidential Suites include full kitchens with sleek ranges and sinks. All
bathrooms have white stone countertops and gray walk-in
showers with rainfall showerheads and BLVD bath products; there are no bathtubs. Guests complain of street noise in some rooms.

Features

Full-service spa and slick on-site cocktail bar and cafe

The fresh and chic BLVD Spa is a main draw for many guests, offering a wide array of facials, massages, body treatments, and
waxing. The
BLVD Bar and Cafe serves pastries, coffee, sandwiches, and cocktails made with infused liquors; free happy hour drinks are available. The indoor pool is pretty small and a bit dim, being situated just off the parking garage, and has white
leather seating. Likewise, the fitness
center is very small, with only three cardio machines. There is on-site parking in
the garage for a daily fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout, though inconsistent.
